Laptop sometimes doesn't wake up from sleeping

Hello, lately my laptop (with an up to date Manjaro) has exhibited a behavior where I close my lid (which prompts it to go to sleep) but then when I open the lid again it doesn’t wake up. I can sometimes still see the mouse cursor (but I can’t move it), but the rest of the screen is black.

This has happened quite a few times starting about a month or so, but it hadn’t happened before. So I have no idea of what is causing it, but it feels like it’s related something that got upgraded aroudn that time maybe?

Here is the end of journalctl --boot=-1

Is it possible that your problem and mine have a same root problem? I noticed my build-in keyboard and touchpad not functioning after a system sleep since some recent update. Detailed info is here in my post. Built-in keyboard & trackpad not functioning after a system sleep

I just come across this. Hope it could help you.resume may fail with a static (non-blinking) cursor on a black screen

@Lengran I think both these problems are different from mine. Your current problem is only about the mouse and keyboard, while mine is pretty much the whole system. Even the virtual consoles don’t work.

It does look similar to the issue you posted from 2018. It doesn’t seem like my issue is the same as one either since it’s a very different kernel version and that problem was related to the nvidiafb module, which I don’t have.

Thanks for the links, though! And good luck with your problem.

did you tried with different kernels?
is AHCI enabled in bios? if its not, and is in RAID mode, and you are dual booting with windows, dont enable ahci, otherwise you will not be able to boot into windows…
the logs doesnt show any errors… are they from the failed resume?
it looks like you are using s2idle:

post output from:
cat /sys/power/mem_sleep

Not yet. It’s on my to-do list but I’m still trying to figure out how to downgrade the kernel via GUI on Manjaro (I can do it via CLI, but I wanna learn the easy way for future use ). I also like to have a recent kernel for security patches, so ideally I’d figure this out on this kernel.

I’m not sure what it is the BIOS, but I’m not booting windows and I’ve had this laptop with this boot setup for over an year and until then it hadn’t given me any problem.

Also yes, the logs are from the failed resume for sure. The next lines on on my journal are from the next system boot already.

The output is

[s2idle]

Thanks!

since it started to happen recently, it could be a kernel issue… you can install the 5.15 lts from system settings/kernel, and during boot you select it in grub menu/advanced options - but dont select the fallback one, select the normal one…
if you dont have grub shown during boot, do this:
kate /etc/default/grub
and edit this line to look like this:
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu
save the file and update grub:
sudo update-grub
reboot and select the 5.15 and test…

so just to be sure, check in bios if AHCI is enabled…

is there really only s2idle output? if yes, so your laptop doesnt support suspend to ram…

Thanks for the tips! I’ll try switching the kernel later if we can’t zero in on a cause.

I just checked and AHCI is enabled. In fact, it’s the only SATA controller mode available on my laptop. Is that good/expected?

And yes, [s2idle] is the full output of cat /sys/power/mem_sleep.

This is surprising to me because (1) I thought every modern laptop had both suspend to RAM and to Swap and my laptop is pretty recent (Lenovo Yoga 6 13ALC6). Although now that you brought it up I could find some issues online about this. Sorry about the lack of knowledge, but is that a limitation of my laptop or is this something I can get going via a module or something? I can found evidence online for both.

And it’s also surprising because (2) my laptop is configured to sleep when the lid is closed, and that works like 90% of the time. Only occasionally giving me problems.

Any thoughts on these?

Yes, I just realized the difference between your problem and mine.

To use a different kernel, the GUI way is
1. Download one from manjaro settings manager - kernel.
2. For a newer kernel, it should boot automatically on your next boot. For older kernels, press ESC during system startup to enter GRUB menu, where you can choose a kernel to boot.

As for the sleep mode, I heard someone said recent Wintel laptops are using a different sleep mechanism instead of conventional S3 sleep. If I remembered it correct, it should be S0 sleep or something like that. I hope this info be helpful to you.

ahci enabled is good …
it looks like your lenovo doesnt support deep sleep, but only shallow(s2idle)… check again in bios settings related to power managemement/sleep/S3, maybe there will be something…
when you have again the wake up problems, post again logs, because the above logs dont have anything usefull, and they look incomplete

@brahma I understand that the logs don’t have anything useful, but they are the outputs I get. I guess it’s possible part of the logs got lost? Do you have other commands or files that I could check?

In any case, the same error happened again after I let the computer sleeping overnight. Here are some relevant outputs:
