KWrite - Spelling, can't change language

Under the Tools menu in KWrite there is a Spelling command to check spelling in the current document. But it always changes the dictionary language to Swedish, and suggests words using Swedish words from that dictionary, even if I change it to English. Either changing it by using the drop down box in the check spelling dialog/tool area at the bottom of the program window, or by using the Change Dictionary command within KWrite (also under the Tools menu).

I use a mixed locale, English UTF-8 with Swedish keyboard layout, calendar, sorting, numbers and similar settings. Young people who translate things from English to Swedish and I aren’t speaking the same language. I speak Swedish, young people of today don’t. They speak Swenglish and introduce a vocabulary I don’t agree with. Therefore I use English for my system language and translate in my head instead. Then I only have to argue with myself. 8)

It also doesn’t seem to matter if i set the language in Kate. KWrite still changes the dictionary language on its own to Swedish.

Anybody knows of a workaround for this weird changing of dictionary language? If not, I think I have to go back to using Geany as my default editor. Although Geany behaves rather strangely at times, I need that spellchecker to be working.

Thanks.

You need to change the default language in kwrite’s settings for the change to be permanent.

Open kwrite’s Settings menu. Then select Configure KWrite → Editing → Spellcheck and change the default language:

Being a mixed locale system, you may also have to change some other settings such as autodetection of language. But setting the default spellcheck language may be enough.

Cool, thanks! 8)

Although, one does wonder why there are settings elsewhere that do nothing but confuse you when they don’t work. 8/
