Knewstuff refuses to open

As title says, trying to open knewstuff through any of the system dialogues that use it (downloading wallpaper plugins, downloading themes, etc.) either yields a blank white window or the window refusing to open at all.

This is what attempting to open the Widget browser yields:

Attempting to open the “Get New Plugins…” dialogue in the wallpaper menu just does nothing at all. From trying to troubleshoot this I did stumble across a few posts that suggest that the output of journalctl --follow --user-unit plasma-plasmashell may tell what the issue is, but I’ve been in microslop land for a few too many years and my Linux-Fu is no longer what it was.

In case it may help in diagnosing the issue, the output of that command (and then attempting to hit the “Get New Plugins…” button) is as follows:

May 13 22:55:38 neptune plasmashell[1386]: QQmlComponent: Component is not ready
May 13 22:55:38 neptune plasmashell[1386]: qrc:/qt/qml/org/kde/newstuff/Button.qml:119: TypeError: Cannot read property 'open' of null

Help much appreciated and thank you in advance!

[Mini-HowTo] Provide System Information

Basic details provided by *-fetch type apps might give enough information for someone wishing to buy a computer, however, for Support purposes it’s best to ask your system directly.

Output of the inxi command will generate more useful and detailed information for those who may wish to help:

Suggested inxi command (use either):

inxi -zv8 (short-form)
inxi --filter --verbosity=8 (long-form)

Command output should be presented as pre-formatted text in accordance with forum guidelines. :eyes:

Running inxi within a chroot environment

  • Add --color=0 to the long-form command, or…
  • Change the short-form command to inxi -zv8c0

Your privacy is respected

[Mini-HowTo] Present code or command output

Note: Grave accent (or, backtick) characters are used. :eyes:

For inline code or to show a single command:

  • please follow this simple example: code here.

For multi-line command output:

  • place text beween two rows of three (```) backtick characters to form a scrollable text box, or …
  • use the </> button in the Compose window to achieve the same result.

The empty row between these rows of backtick characters is where to paste any multi-line command output (such as inxi).

An example of a pre-formatted text enclosure:

What is a Quark?

A. In Physics, an elementary particle and fundamental constituent of matter.
B. A character from the Star Trek: "Deep Space Nine" television series.
C. A soft, creamy, usually unsalted cheese traditional to central Europe.

  • Simply starting with sudo useradd -m testuser and log in to see if the “Get New…” dialogs work there is a great plasma diagnostic.

Also, cleaning up can help:

rm -rf ~/.cache/plasma*
rm -rf ~/.cache/knewstuff*
rm -f ~/.qmlc ~/.qmlcache/*

:warning: Is kernel 6.18.26-1 not outdated?

  • I have 28-2 now, but I’m on Testing.

:brain: Perhaps your system isn’t properly synchronised.

sudo pacman-mirrors -f8 --timeout 3
sudo pacman -Syu

Also, you can paste the result from:

pacman -Q | grep -E "knewstuff|plasma-framework|qqc2|kirigami|qt6-declarative"

I don’t know if it is the same issue. For me the Knewstuff window shows “Loading data” and it does so for at least five minutes until it succeeds eventually. This isn’t likely to be caused by a misconfiguration - i have a plain test user and there it behaves exactly the same. Could be a very slow server (or it downloads some GiBs of data) - i think it calls api.kde-look.org. Oh and if you close the window after it succeeded showing the data, and you just hit “Get New…” again you wait for 5 minutes again

I’m not sure anyone does - perhaps this would be better taken up with the KDE forum - Lots of developers checking in there and responding to issues, pulling some of them from the forums to create bug reports.

Get New stuff... was always an interesting feature, but it was never a reliable tool :stuck_out_tongue:

I tried last night and again moments ago, it loads up quickly.

But sometimes it can be slow, but I’m certain the problem is on their side.

It’s a server problem at store.kde.org’s end — which is actually only a forefront to pling.com — related to its search function, and it has already been around for about 125 years now.

I think Pling.com was folded back into Opendesktop.org (since about April) - the payout system was discontinued too… so Opendesktop is now the official KDE Store.
