Random freezes, sometimes system can't boot after restart forcing me to use hard reset

Hello, I’m using laptop HP Pavilion 15-cx with nvidia gtx 1050 mobile my system randomly freezes from time to time. After reading a bunch of topics my guess is that it could be something related to discrete NVIDIA videocard because their drivers is atrocious and proprietary. Few times system freezed while I was playing game on opengl with portproton.

I tried some things to fix some of the issues.
That’s the few that i remeber

Changed some of my grub options to fix fn key not changing and fix random freezes, that maked my system more stable but still the problem persist

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet udev.log_priority=3 pci=nommconf acpi_backlight=native efi=runtime"

I changed kernels few times, having installed 5.4, 5.10 and 5.18, I try only to use LTS version, because their name imply they’re more stable.
Right now I’m on 5.10, changed it from 5.4 because often people tell to install more newer version of kernel.

I installed optimus manager and chaned it to hybrid, but it didn’t work so i used workaround from here GPU setup was initiated but Xorg post-start hook did not run

Installed TLP but didn’t change any settings.

prime-run vlc

or is running via the iGPU ?

Sorry, I’m not an experienced Linux user, i just launched an .mkv file and watched it with vlc player.

I know is quite a task to read all of PRIME - ArchWiki but in order to get familiar with how a hybrid GPU laptop works under linux you have to get trough it.

If everything runs via the Intel GPU, then at some point it might be choked and cause the system to freeze, even tho you have the proper GPU drivers installed, reasons why some software can be run to use the dGPU, aka the Nvidia GPU in your case.

Should I always run programs like this, is there no other way to automatically detect it or something, that was one of the reason i installed optimus-manager

you can add another parameter to the grub:
pcie_aspm=off
update grub: sudo update-grub reboot and see if that helped

also did you uncomment the 2 lines in sddm.conf when installing optimus?

Not all require powerful GPU, but you can test if has different outcomes. Also check/compare temperatures and when the freeze happen if is or without the prime-run thing …

Can you please explain a little why i have to do it and what it will do, atleast for me to undertand what I’m doing with my system, cause from what i grasp sddm is a lock screen and it’s probably its settings.

for optimus to work properly you need to uncomment the 2 display commands line in the ssdm.conf

Did all of this, today again it did freeze, and i again pushed hard reset after waiting for some time, it didn’t boot after first reset and freeze on login screen and after another hard reset it did boot.

Could be something with this BadWindow BadDrawable
Btw I always notice that first thing that starts lagging is plasma interface, for example app panel.

those bad windows baddrawable are ‘normal’ plasma logs, everyone has them using plasma, ignore them…

check in the application menu if its there … if its go to system settings/startup and see if its there, if not add it, click apply reboot

Yeah I added setting in the tray, after some testing system works much better, I’m using the hybrid mode most of the time, still not sure if I’m doing any power management. Though sometimes system still freeze, but unfreeze after a little bit of time. Mostly while I watching videos on youtube or doing something in dolphin.
