Kernels 5.17 and 5.16 not accessing display management

Sorry if not doing things correctly fighting a very bad migraine.
Can not login into SDDM and KDE fine with kernals 5.16 and earlier. Any kernal after that the boot process seems to get stuck best I can figure lacking a command to access SDDM. Checking journals when 5.17 1st arrived showed no errors or panics but did not worry about it as experimental kernels tend to have issues anyway so stayed with 5.16. 5.17 is getting well established and still does not seem to call SDDM.
Can only think of missing a command somewhere.

You didn’t give any information about your system. Still, I guess you’re missing the correct NVIDIA drivers.

Welcome to Manjaro! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

  1. Please read the information behind this link. It will help you to post necessary information. [HowTo] Provide System Information
  2. Please press the three dots below your post and then press the :pencil2:
  • If you give us information about your system, we can see what we’re talking about and make better suggestions.
  • You can do this by using inxi in a terminal or in console.
inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width
  • Personally identifiable information such as serial numbers and MAC addresses are filtered out by this command

Get well soon for your headache

I use the manjaro settings kernel installer which usually installs the needed nvidia driver. Is there a way of finding out if the propeer one was installed for 5.17 and 5.18?

I can see better now but brain is still not functioning well.

I think the issue is that I am not installing nvidia drivers. Trying to install linux518-nvidia-470xx-470.103.01-0.2 I get this output:

Did install linux517-nvidia 510. 518 510 does not seem to be available.

Are you trying through pacman or mhwd? The latter is more recommended.

 sudo mhwd -i pci video-nvidia-470xx

Not sure about the driver name here though.

Sorry about long delay in replying. Other things in life got in the way.
Update:
AM using manjaro settings manager mainly as my kernel installer. From installation nvidia-utils was used. so I decided to try nvidia-470xx-utils To see if that would fix things. Had gotten nvidia-utils to run with 516 and 517 but ran into the same problem with the newest 518. changing to nvidia-470xx-utils did not help but did point out what is maybe the problem when I got this output when running settings manager.

The following packages will be installed:
linux518
linux518-nvidia-470xx

Seems that linux518-nvidia-470xx instead of creating a new extramodules-5.18-MANJARO is trying to use the extramodules-5.17-MANJARO. I believe the same thing was occurring when I ran into the original issue.

This indeed warrants an issue: Packages / Extra / linux518-extramodules / nvidia-470xx · GitLab

Would not put this as the advised solution, but worked in my case.
Did something very stupid and had to reinstall root. When it came to the kernels I installed 5.18 first then because I always like to options installed 5.17. My live drive installed 5.15.
For some reason this fixed whatever was causing my 5.18 Kernel trying to install nvidia into the 5,17 folder so now everything works as far as that is concerned.
On a side note some other issues seem to also have cleared up so that it probably was a good thing to need to reinstall root.
