Kernel 60 laggy on amd?

Since I updated to 5.19 kernel and then 6.0 my system is feeling laggy. the old kernel 5.18 working fine, LTS 5.15 is laggy too.

And in the benchmarks-results from hardinfo you can indeed see how bad the gpu drawing with the 6.0 kernel is (and 5.19 too!). In practice, the mouse and folder moves are framing.

Has somebody similar experiences or an idea what the reason could be?

edit 3:
Could it have to do with the Retbleed security update?

With newer kernels sometimes bugs popup. You might want to try the 5.15 LTS kernel and see if the issue goes away.

I can not reproduce the issue, useless, I am using the dedicated AMD GPU.

I tested GPU benchmark with hardinfo and glmark2 . I do not have 5.18 that is EOL.

| kernel | 5.15 LTS | 5.19 | 6.0.2 |
|-------------|----------|----------|----------|
| GPU Drawing | 18704.82 | 18789.51 | 19312.78 |
| glmark2 | 25251 | 25063 | 25180 |

The newest Kernel 5.15 has the same issues. Kernel 5.18 has is no problems.

I will test glmark2 too and edit the main thread.

I installed Linux 5.18.19-3-manjaro manually from my pacman cache and tested it.

| kernel | 5.15 LTS | 5.19 | 6.0.2 | 5.18.19 |
|-------------|----------|----------|----------|----------|
| GPU Drawing | 18704.82 | 18789.51 | 19312.78 | 19208.06 |

It takes long probably more than 5 minutes.

Has it maybe to do with the Retbleed update?

Thanks for testing. That’s bizarre…

So the reason for this could be in the specific cpu from me or my kernel settings. Or what could I do next?

  1. Try to remove them and add mitigations=off
  2. Edit /etc/mkinitcpio.conf to add amdgpu in MODULES.
  3. run sudo mkinitcpio -P && sudo update-grub
  4. Create a new file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-amdgpu.conf if you are using Xorg.
Section "Device"
    Identifier "AMD"
    Driver "amdgpu"
    Option "TearFree" "true"
EndSection
  1. Plug the cable of the power supply into your laptop.
  2. Reboot and select Kernel LTS or 6.0, see if it works?

I don’t have lagginess. Kernel 6.0.2

  1. Change “Schedutil” to “performance”
    sudo cpupower frequency-set --governor performance

  2. Check sudo cpupower frequency-info again, if it shows “performance”

  3. Plug the cable of the power supply into your laptop.

  4. Then test the benchmark.

The result is a bit higher, but don’t think it’s a real difference. Every test I made was with power supply.

Check if journalctl -b -p err --no-page shows kernel error messages?

If no error, try to enable AMD P-state instead acpi-cpufreq.

If it does not help, I am out of ideas, then You can report Issues ¡ drm / amd ¡ GitLab

it doesn’t look like kernel errors… I will do the pstate-instruction

And then a lot of “Failed to start DisplayLink Manager Service.”-errors

Why do you use DisplayLink?

Try to disable it: sudo systemctl disable --now displaylink.service

Try to install linux[VERSION]-headers, then run sudo mkinitcpio -P, reboot.

I can’t find CPPC-settings in the T14 BIOS settings (Ryzen 7 PRO 4750U)

journalctl -b 0 | grep pstate
answers with
Failed to insert module 'amd_pstate': No such device

so I only can use acpi-cpufreq… ?

I didn’t know that I can use displaylink features without the displaylink package too…

linux headers is already installed.

now I reboot to check the displaylink error. Thanks for the hint!

The displaylink errors are still there but significantly fewer
