I tried kernel 6.12.4-1 and this kernel does not boot to desktop KDE and no splash screen.

Something seem to be wrong as the Kernel parameters still show 6.6.65

Did you fully update first? If not, you’d be in a partial update status.

Hi @Keruskerfuerst,

I suspect that output is from a still-working kernel.

We need more information. I am using 6.12 as I type this, so it does work. (And I have an Nvidia GPU.)

So kindly provide more information, and provide the output of the following:

journalctl --priority=warning..crit --no-pager --boot=-1

Where:

  • The --priority=warning..err argument limits the output to warnings and errors only;
  • the --no-pager formats the output nicely for use here, on the forum; and
  • the --boot=-1 argument limits the output to log messages from the previous boot. This can be adjusted to -2 for the boot before that, -3 to the boot before that, and so on and so forth.

More:

Note that the above text is partially pre-prepared as general instructions for new users. Please take the time to follow the given links to learn more.

Yes, that’s my assumption as well. Seem to be that the update at least partially didn’t go through.
I am using also 6.12 and my secondary GPU is working without issues.

is you video card is recognized well with wayland / and drivers nouveau ,
also missing boot kernel parameter
( in case of nvidia drivers , not nouveau drivers )
nvidia-drm.modeset=1 nvidia_drm.fbdev=1

you can check this point

sudo cat /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modeset

Y or N

Is there maybe something wrong with nvidia and kernel 6.12 in the branch?

  1. I can´t boot kernel 6.12.4-1: no desktop, no tty.
  2. I am using the noveau driver.
  3. The system is fully updated.
  4. cat: /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modeset: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden

output:

journalctl --priority=warning..crit --no-pager --boot=-1

Kernel 6.12.4-1 does not boot to desktop and tty, so I can´t give information.
The computer freezes after login → reset button.
But I can boot kernel 6.12.4-1 to login screen (KDE) and post information.

Then it should have been obvious to do this:

…from the working kernel, wouldn’t you say?

After some tries, I could reproduce the hard lock:

journalctl --priority=warning..crit --no-pager --boot=-1

The system does not even boot to login screen.

This May be unrelated.

  • Have you tried to replug your ram modules, and to
Look into the BIOS wheter all ram Is recognized
    :footprints:

Now, the computer does not even boot to login screen.

During boot, the monitor goes to standby and the computer freezes.

Bios detects all RAM and kernel 6.6.65 boots fine.

Then there’s no problem, really, is there? Seeing as its LTS anyway…

I have tried kernel 6.12.4 and it does not work.
So I continue with kernel 6.6.65.

Without being able to offer you a solution, I can tell you that I have a laptop myself that has similar problems.
It runs without problems with kernel 6.6. With 6.12 it ends up in the emergency shell without a mounted file system. And consequently without a log.
I’ll wait and see. First make a backup. Then, when I have time, I’ll take a closer look.

I have installed kernel 6.12.11 and the computer does not boot to login screen.

I guess you’ve already tried removing “quiet” and “splash” from the GRUB cmdline? Test by doing it from the GRUB menu by pressing E to edit, then boot from that.

This way you should see where it gets stuck, via the startup messages on screen.

It could be a Plymouth issue? :man_shrugging:

This may not be related.

Consider updating your BIOS. I note your current BIOS version 2.1a was released in 2018; there are likely to be several updated non-beta BIOS versions available; perhaps one of them might be more suitable for the latest kernels.

Regards.

You might try and uninstall and reinstall 6.12.Also since you have an nvidia card did linux612-headers and the nvidia driver update. As @soundofthunder posted might not hurt to update the bios.
