Kde: wayland vs x11

I’m currently using xfce with x11. I wanted to play around with kde + wayland, so I did a live boot of manjaro-kde-25.0.3-250526-linux612.iso.

After booting the iso, I did:

 $ echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

and it said

X11

on a regular install with a laptop, intel core 9 + nvidia 4060. How do I change it to wayland?

I’m trying to test and then decide if I want to switch from xfce + x11 to kde + wayland.

Thanks

You can change your Plasma session from X11 to Wayland by selecting the session type at the login screen (Wayland is the default for Plasma).

It has been a while since I used a live USB, but I am fairly sure that you can still log out of a live Plasma session, although I am not sure what the default user password is for the live image. Edit: I just did a quick search - the user & password should both be manjaro

If you have set up autologin to skip the password screen, you can change to a Wayland session by opening System Settings → Colors & Themes → Login Screen (SDDM) → Behavior.
