Good one. I resemble that! LOL! But here’s some irony. I upgraded the xfce Mint lappy to 4.18 and Thunar file manager is still at 4.16. Meanwhile I am playing with Thunar in Manjaro and REALLY liking it.

Getting back on topic, I have given the latest PCLinuxOS Plasma Edition a try yesterday, running off of a Ventoy’d USB stick. Yes, it was PCLinuxOS — I’m downloading the newly released Manjaro Sikaris .iso right now — but I’m also occasionally helping out at the PCLinuxOS forum, and it also comes with Plasma 5.24.6.
I’ve set it up to roughly resemble my installed Manjaro Plasma — “roughly”, because there are differences due to PCLinuxOS being a very different distribution.
For starters, even though it’s a rolling-release distro too, it’s not curated and it’s somewhat on par with Manjaro Testing or even Manjaro Unstable on account of the package versions. On the other hand, it is at the same time a very conservative distro that doesn’t use systemd and uses an older (and non-systemd-dependent) gdm by default as the display manager, even for Plasma.
So, what I’ve done is set it up with a global menu, and I installed the Opal Plasma theme from store.kde.org, as well as a window decoration that resembled mine. I also used the application dashboard widget instead of the standard application menu, because that’s what I have here in my installed system as well.
What I could not do was install a kvantum application theme, because kvantum is not included in the live image — strangely enough, it does include the newly rewritten desktop cube effect, as well as the Kate sessions widget, which appears to have been dropped in Manjaro’s KDE Frameworks package.
After I set it up, I logged out and back in — which was what caused the freezes here on my system when I upgraded from 5.24.6 LTS to 5.25 — and there were no issues.
So, keeping in mind that this was a different distribution and that I could not completely duplicate the exact setup I have here on my system with 5.24.7 LTS, Plasma 5.26.4 did appear to be stable during that test. And that is hopeful.

Might it be a combination of things? Fresh ISO + no SystemD + PCLinuxOS under-the-hood configuration?
What I’m hopeful for is that the next iteration of KDE “LTS” will not only be stable, but also bring back smoother and more intuitive animations (which has a notable effect on workflow), and to fix long-standing bugs that still exist with 5.24 and 5.26. 
I recall reading from Nate that many major fixes won’t be worked on until the 6.x series, due to the major changes required in the code.
I’ll be honest, I’m surprisingly pleased that using KDE Plasma 5.24.7 LTS with KDE Frameworks 5.101 actually works on a “sort of, kind of” rolling release distro. 
In fact, of the two computers I have, it’s a better experience for me with the one using the Plasma LTS repository.

Yeah, that was to be expected already. I just hope they won’t forget that they still have a 5.27 LTS to maintain while they’re working on 6.x. It would be a refreshing change from their earlier attitude during the transition from one generation of their desktop environment to the next.

But what about the implications for Manjaro specifically? Even if upstream maintains a 5.27 LTS branch, we’ll still have to jump to 6.x once it reaches the repositories. (Unless of course we get a “round 2” of a custom local repository.) 
Or we witness a miracle and the release of 6.0 is polished and stable right out the door!

I am rather hoping that the Manjaro packagers will not make the same mistake again of placating the whining n00bs who think that a higher version number equates to “better”, as was the case with the move from 5.24 to 5.25.
I’m not a packager, but as I see it, it should be perfectly possible to carry two versions of Plasma in the repository, the same way as that we’ve been carrying two versions of LibreOffice for years already: a plasma-still or plasma-lts group and a plasma-fresh or plasma-current group.
And let the whining n00bs install Arch and take their rants to the Arch forum, where they will then very quickly learn why Manjaro has a much better reputation.
6.x is going to be very different.
For starters, according to the KDE developers’ exchanges with regard to the preliminary development of 6.x, kvantum will be broken, because kvantum uses SVG-based themes, and the plan is to give Plasma 6.x its own theme engine that does not use SVG, but rather something like CSS-based themes.
So that means that about 75% of the theme-related content at store.kde.org will be broken and no longer usable. Existing widgets will probably all be broken as well due to the significant differences between qt6 and qt5.
I’m still using 5.4. It’s a goodie, and I don’t like changing a winning team.

This I assumed was quite feasible. In fact, not just with the case of Libre Office, but Manjaro even builds and offers (on the official repositories) multiple iterations of the Linux Kernel, and likewise multiple versions of drivers for each kernel (Nvidia, ZFS, etc.)
So the concept is there, and it works. 
That’s because kernel 5.4 is never gonna give you u-, oh, we stopped doing that? Nevermind.

Updated via the latest Stable Update (2022-12-24), and I think I found a problem that is related to using KDE Plasma 5.24.7 LTS. 
The Pamac tray icon is not behaving nor responding properly.
It has no affect on the application itself, and even if I completely kill the processes pamac-manager and pamac-daemon, it remains in the tray as a useless dummy icon.
I also noticed that “Refresh Database” never finishes, even if I re-launch a fresh instance of Pamac’s GUI.
I suspect this might be due to sticking on an older version of KDE, because these issues do not exist on my other computer using KDE 5.26.4.
No issues with pamac or pacman in the terminal.
EDIT: It’s hit-or-miss with Pamac’s tray.
I’m noticing occasional “refreshes” of Plasma sometimes as well.
EDIT 2: There’s seems to be a latency issue as well. Some elements of Plasma don’t update/redraw/refresh as quickly as they used to. For instance, clearing the Recent Files view or deleting a large batch of files in Dolphin.
It’s hard to say what the underlying issue might be, or if it’s even worth it at this point to try to figure it out.

This release has been terrible for me, to the point that I’m probably going to do a fresh install.
On startup:
- The entire taskbar is just a block of the default green color from the Breath theme (I’m using Breeze) without any icons showing
- The application launcher doesn’t display any icons either
- Opening the battery/network/volume popups just shows a white square inside
- Right-clicking on the desktop covers the entire screen with an empty gray box, like the context menu is scaled 1000x
These can be fixed by restarting plasmashell. Things that aren’t fixed:
- The dialog prompt for sudo (from, for example,
systemctl restart <service>) just makes the entire screen black, with no window showing. I can still type the password and submit it with Enter - Chrome’s file picker dialog is completely broken. It doesn’t show any icons or text elements, just buttons that are low resolution, weirdly shaped, and don’t do anything. It is very stretched horizontally, I can drag it right-to-left for at least 7-8 monitor widths and still not reach the right edge. It can snap to screen edges, but that doesn’t make it work
- Windows have no title
I created a fresh user, all of the above still happens, except for the taskbar color. Tried with kernel 6.1 and 5.15.

Wow this actually fixed all the unstable hell - I was about to downgrade to 24.7.
Shame it doesn’t happen automatically/suggested by the system.

Well that’s interesting. Connecting the monitor after login did fix it, thank you!
Never had this problem before the update though, so it’s definitely a regression.
(I do have a separate problem with the GPU, the system will often hang on boot with AE_AML_LOOP_TIMEOUT, but that’s a kernel/driver issue)

Actually, not everything is fixed 
Most task switchers aren’t showing at all or they look weird, but all still allow me to switch windows.
- Breeze opens, but doesn’t highlight the selected window and doesn’t have a background
- Compact, Large Icons, Small Icons show only text, without a background and without any icons
- Grid has black squares for half the thumbnails, and they stretch over some of the visible ones too
- Breeze Dark/Twilight, Breath (+ Dark/Light), Informative, Thumbnails, Thumbnail Grid don’t show at all
- Cover Switch and Flip Switch work fine
Also, when any switcher opens, the log is spammed with ~60 lines of the same message:

For the Cover/Flip Switch, the message only appears when they scroll over to a “KDE” window (Konsole, System Settings) but not for Chrome or IntellIJ.

Given that Plasma 5.27.3 LTS has hit the Stable branch with the 2023.03.31 update, there is no point to keeping this thread open anymore.
