KDE Panels slow/long to respond/freezing and high idle CPU temp than normal

Noticed my issue a few days ago, after booting up as normal, I noticed the CPU temp was unusually high than normal, about 20-30C higher, and noticed that Panels was very slow to respond, maybe 15-20 seconds after a click on an icon. Launching terminal via the standard keyboard shortcut works without issues.

I’ve been troubleshooting for a few days but haven’t seen any real fixes. Also, please note that I do not have any crazy customization on my system aside from having CPU, and GPU temp and Fan RPM on two Panels on two different monitors. All of the issues were present after booting my PC for that day. Here’s what I mostly did:

  • When first encountered, tried using an older kernel, from 6.16 booted into 6.12 and that appeared to fix it for that day
  • Second encounter was the second day, still being on 6.12, I decided to restore from a timeshift backp from a few days ago, that fixed it for that day as well.
  • Third encounter, still being on 6.12, again encountered the issue, tried restoring timeshift again but this time it did not fix it. Did a little more troubleshooting:
    • I have GNOME, installed but not configured on the same machine and decided to use that to start my session with the same user and checked the CPU temps and they were in the normal usual range I expect them to be. Here’s when I confirmed it was KDE causing the issue
    • Rebooted again and switched to 6.16, did the GNOME test and got the same normal CPU temps.
    • Logged back into a KDE session, same issue, opened up a terminal and did a kquitapp6 plasmashell checked the CPU temps again and yes, it is on the usual range again.
  • Currently, logged into a KDE session with plasmashell turned off and the CPU temps are stable. Once I start it backup I can see the CPU temps climb up again and Panels become unresponsive or very slow to respond.

I don’t know where to go from here as well, this is by far the first issue i’ve experienced since fully switching to Manjaro a few years ago. But quite certain at this point that this is caused by KDE Plasma, I’ve seen an older post on a different forum for a different distro that had this exact issue, but for that specific user restarting plasmashell multiple times and multiple reboots fixed it for them, no real fix was written on the post.

Any ideas? Any specific logs I need to share to get a better understanding of what’s happening?

Try running:

journalctl --user-unit=plasma-plasmashell -n 100

to see a bit more information and share the output here - it will likely help identify the exact cause of the problem.

Also, I noticed from your profile that you’re using KDE Plasma 6. Could you please confirm the exact version?
If you’d like, you can run fastfetch to check your DE version there.

Thanks! :folded_hands:

For sure, here’s my output:

Wow, you got quite a few errors. IMO one of the problems is Binding loop detected, - the panel keeps recursively trying to reload/recalculate widget sizes. Also, you have many other errors, so first thing: recreate your panel config.

If you don’t care much about it, you can just delete and restart. If you want to keep it for later, just rename it (btw don’t forget about it :upside_down_face: ):

mv ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc.verybroken

kquitapp5 plasmashell

plasmashell &

This should create a new panel without broken widgets

For PulseAudio and PipeWire, I think the best approach is also to restart:

rm -r ~/.config/pulse
pulseaudio -k
systemctl --user restart pipewire pipewire-pulse

Then you can check your speakers and microphone.

For Print Manager, the best option is probably to fully reconnect your printers or download the software from the manufacturer. For example, I had an HP Supertank and used the HP Smart app to reconnect it. I’m sure your case is similar (as long as it’s not a driver problem :folded_hands: )

Also, you have an issue with the keyboard backlight. I cannot say much without knowing your device model. On my Asus, asusctl + OpenRGB (available in repositories) worked fine.

Cheers!

Oh wow thanks for these! I will try all of your suggestions but for the panel stuff, I forgot to mention in my post that one of the troubleshooting things I did was to completely rename plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrcalready to have it generate a new, stock, default one. That actually solved the sluggishness of the panel, however it did not resolve the CPU temp issue.

Could the other errors cause the high CPU temp?

Just a quick note that the correct way to restart plasmashell on a systemd-based distro such as Manjaro is:

systemctl restart --user plasma-plasmashell

An alternative command which will also work on non-systemd distros is:

kquitapp6 plasmashell; kstart plasmashell

However, the systemd method should be the first choice for Manjaro users.

It’s great to hear that the panel is working better now.

As for the high CPU temperature - as I mentioned earlier, it’s most likely caused by the PulseAudio errors, printer issues, and problematic widgets such as the weather applet and Kickoff (its icon doesn’t even load properly).

Regarding the printer - as I said before, try reconnecting it or downloading the appropriate driver/software for your printer model from the manufacturer’s website. The logs show that the system isn’t just failing to get the list of printers, so a reconnection or reinstall should help.

For FanControl, try reinstalling it - it’s probably outdated or corrupted. If you don’t need it, you can simply remove it from your system. (Btw, if you’re monitoring temperatures through this the data might not be reliable since the logs clearly show errors with FanControl.) It’s also a good idea to make sure that lm_sensors is installed, as FanControl depends on it.
Here’s more onn Arch wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Fan_speed_control

For Kickoff, just go to Menu Settings → Icon and choose one you like, it’s likely that when you changed your theme, the icon simply failed to load.

As for the weather widget, the logs say it can’t find the data source (in other words, it doesn’t know where to get the weather info from). You can configure this manually or just reinstall the widget and choose a data provider.
Here’s a useful link : https://discuss.kde.org/t/weather-widget-is-not-displaying-temp-wind-etc/9231

Appreciate your help on this, but uhm, i’m not exactly sure what fixed it? Before getting around to all of your suggestions, first thing I did was to retry creating a new config file the same way I’ve done it before and it looked like it didn’t do anything aside from letting me use panels and everything else, CPU temps were still pretty high but after some time it started to go down.

I’ve since reloaded my original config file and everything seems stable now, at least for the past ~24 hours. I will still work on cleaning my system with your suggestions but it looks like this is solved! Will mark your previous reply as the solution. Thanks a bunch!

this is good to know, thank you!

So, you marked a post as the solution to your issue without having any clue as to whether anthing in that post actually fixed your problem…

Is that a fair appraisal?
