KDE interface really slow

kde
intel
nvidia
dell

#1

Hi all,
I’m using manjaro for a couple of months, arriving from almost 10 years of arch and I’ve a problem with KDE. Basically the interface and software are really really slow and there are many graphical glitch (for example transparent lines into konsole). I’ve already tried to create a clean user and to mixing the compositing methods, but all have the same problems as opengl3. 1. Also other desktop environments doesn’t have this problem (tried gnome, xfce4 and cinnamon).
My system is a dell inspiron with Intel and nvidia gtx1060 card, as driver I use non-free nvidia and bumblebee (default setup done by mhw during installation). I cannot switch to nouveau because I need proprietary for work, mainly gpu rendering with blender.

Someone have any clue?
Let me know if some other info is needed.

Thanks

-PN

#2

Hard to address to someone using arch for so long since i have only 2 years of Manjaro and no arch prior to that.

That might be related to the Intel GPU, but the driver should work. There are some machines that need to:
sudo pacman -R xf86-video-intel
probably also delete 20-intel.conf
but this for UHD 630 AFAIK.

You should pass a view on this:

Since you mentioned Dell, but no other detail, i can only point you to this:

#3

why not try optimus-manager
https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php?title=Optimus_Manager

#4

If it’s a fresh installation it maybe baloo initial DB building. Have you checked what usage drains CPU and RAM?

#5

Well it doesn’t mean that you could not help me  Thanks for your reply, I’ll test this evening.

Never eard of that, will try this too, thanks.

Not a Baloo problem, I’ve not installed it. Cpu almost idle and RAM is normal.

#6

apart from what? You haven’t provided anything… or you thing we believe what you say without any logs/messages :joy:

inxi -Fxxxz
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log
journalctl -b -p3

for a start

#7

This is a typical issue when using HiDPI monitor and setting the monitor scaling to 1.5.

There is no reasonable explanation - not to my knowledge, at least.

#8

IIRC it’s installed by default.
Check output of balooctl status to make sure.
I don’t think it’s a baloo problem though, more likely the 15484th issue with dual-graphics :rage:

#9

OK, but strange due to the fact that I’ve not scaled the monitor…yet. Or it is done by default?

It is proposed but I’ve select only the package I wanted and skipped Baloo. For testing purposes I’ve also tried to do a full install with every proposed package but nothing changed.

#10

It’s a bit hard deciphering what you mean. Does this mean you are doing partial upgrades? If so then please do not as it is a surefire way to bork any rolling distribution.

regards

#11

Maybe he installed with architect and manual package selection?

#12

Baloo is gonna be in there anyway. It’s a dependency of plasma-desktop group. You, of course, can disable it subsequent to install.

#13

Sorry if I expressed myself badly. I’ve done the test without Baloo and without other thing on an already functioning version of Manjaro gnome, installing plasma etc using pamac (following manjaro wiki). Doing that pamac make you choose which package you want to install and I’ve skipper Baloo. I’m not doing partial upgrades.

If as a pedendecy is pull anyway than I’ve not noticed and probably is still installed. I’ll check and disable it if so. Thanks for the heads-up

#14

Baloo is not a part of GNOME so you’re fine there. Baloo is QT.

You may not have expressly installed Baloo in Plasma, but take a look at your installed Plasma system. I would be very surprised not to find it.

#15

Yes I know is not part of gnome. As said previously I’ll check if it’s pull as dependencies and I haven’t noticed it. Could be. First of all I’ll check and disable it if it’s installed, even if I don’t think that’s the problem.

#16

Well, then, please post the output of…

systemd-analyze blame

Also, please check out the utility rng-tools
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Rng-tools

It’s sweeter than haveged

#17

Sure thing! Will do as soon as I arrive home. Thanks a lot for the advise.

Here the info requested.
Now I’ll try the suggestion from before and let you know if something works.

Ahh, bumblebee. This meant my laptop uses Intel’s graphics, except when I explicitly tell it I want to use my GPU.

Well, my machine is always plugged in to AC power, so I removed bumblebee, and now I use the Nvidia Quadro P4000 all the time (I’ve turned off integrated graphics in the BIOS).

I use nvidia-settings to configure X.

At system upgrade time, it automatically does eg dkms install nvidia/410.66 -k 4.19.1-1-MANJARO

Works for me

Nothing obvious showed in logs.
Try running the programs having issues with optirun/primusrun to see if it’s the same with nvidia.

Edit: Also have a look at running processes while you are troubleshooting…

Also check

optirun inxi -SMGxxxz

Have you setup HW acceleration?
