KDE completely crashes while gaming, maybe sound is the issue?

Hey people!

First off: Sorry for not posting in the “right” category, but I am not sure where to exactly post this.

I’ve got a problem that (sometimes) crashes my whole installation of Linux. I can’t do anything anymore except restart via reset button.

What happens: When playing games I encounter some heavy stutter, followed by a complete crash after about 5 seconds after the stutter. This happens to both games played via proton (Hades in this case) and native games (Metro: Exodus). After writing down the time when a crash occurred, I saw a flood of pipewire messages in journalctl. This crash seems to happen faster with Metro than with Hades (or any other game).

I’ve always had issues with my sound devices under Linux and never really found a solution to it. To describe it in short: I’ve got a YAMAHA MG 12 XU (external sound mixer) connected via USB. When not keeping pavucontrol open, opening other applications may cause my whole sound to not work anymore (except I start pavucontrol again or exit and wait 5 sec).

So I recently tried pipewire instead of only PulseAudio, just to get the same issues. I do have other issues now however - the one described above with the crash. When checking journalctl --user --unit pipewire, I see the following (snippet of when I played Metro: Exodus):

This is also the exact time my computer crashed. I suppose the flood of errors is causing my OS to not react anymore.

Also, as a sidenote: Does anyone know a good guide for pipewire / pulseaudio / alsa combos (except Arch Wiki).

Thanks!

ForeGone

Just an update: Seemingly it’s not pipewire. I stopped all the daemons for it now and went PA again.

Got the same problem. Here’s the journalctl:

I had some issues with kwin as well. I ended up adding all my steam games to lutris, then using lutris to launch games with desktop effects disabled in the lutris settings.

How are you launching the games? Maybe your issue is also the compositor.

Hey, thanks for your reply.

I disable the compositor before starting that game. Also: Since a couple of days Metro: Exodus has a native Linux Client.

I’m only starting it with mangohud.
