KDE black screen with cursor after suspend

After suspend my couple of weeks old Manjaro KDE install resumes to a black screen with the cursor. I'm using dual monitors, other specs are listed in the inxi output below.

How to reproduce:

  1. Go to sleep either with:
    • launch menu 'Sleep' entry
    • systemctl suspend
    • dbus: "qdbus --system org.freedesktop.login1 /org/freedesktop/login1 org.freedesktop.login1.Manager.Suspend true"
  2. Wake from sleep.

Only way to recover has been to press CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE, after which the login screen finally loads.
Trying to login via TTY (ctrl+alt+2) and restarting plasmashell or replacing kwin_x11 both fail. The error I get by trying to restart plasmashell is:

qt.qpa.xcb: could not connect to display
qt.qpa.plugin: Could not load the Qt platform plugin "xcb" in "" even though it was found.
This application failed to start because no Qt platform plugin could be initialized. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

Available platform plugins are: wayland-org.kde.kwin.qpa, eglfs, linuxfb, minimal, minimalegl, offscreen, vnc, xcb.

Plasma theme is currently Breeze Dark, it was Breeze Transparent Dark for a time and changing back to regular Dark hasn't helped.

Here's my inxi -Fxzc0 output:

Add to /etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf this line:
Option "ConnectToAcpid" "Off"
to the Section "Device" so that acpi thing doesn't show up/interfere ...

I see no reason why there would be an issue for resuming from suspend. Maybe you need a fixed config as i mentioned here (for different issue)

I'm on KDE and i had no problems with GTX 650 nor with the GTX 960 and fixed config for each.

Maybe you can try to enable haveged service.
systemctl enable haveged --now

Another thing you could try, is to follow the systemd service ... See some examples here:

Thanks for having a look! Here's my /etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf after I added the option:

Do you see anything that should be updated/fixed?

I ran into the haveged service suggestion and I have enabled it without results.

Thanks for the suggestion on the plasma restart service, I'll look into it.

Looks ok to me, as a slight modification of the default one.
Personally i prefer to use also the entry:

Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "IndirectGLX" "On"
EndSection

right between the Section "Extensions" and Section "InputClass" ... i always add more to my config than default, especially for my KDE installs. (old habit).
Look also at the Compositor settings, and make sure is set to be enabled at startup and be on OpenGL 3.1 (might not be related).

That might be the only one that will sure make a difference if nothing else worked.

Thanks. I changed the OpenGL version to 3.1 in the compositor settings but it didn't help either. It was set to enabled at startup and the black screen issue has never come up after a reboot or cold boot.

You might want to disable TLP (or uninstall it temporarily), to exclude it from the possible reasons. Or maybe try to configure it properly.
One at a time, though...

It looks like that disabling TLP was the solution for now! I did add a script that disables bluetooth during suspend since it was preventing the suspension properly staying in sleep but I don't think it was a part of the solution since manually disabling bluetooth service didn't help.

Can you tell me how to configure TLP properly or what to read to be able to do it?

Thank you so much!

Hey! Thought you've gone missing.

Could this manjaro's BSOD (black screen of death) {courtesy of openminded} be due to the boot_indeterminate or boot_success thingy in grubenv? I 've gone through (back then) the workings of /etc/grub.d/xxx_xx
and I think there is a delay (30 secs, 60secs, 2 mins?) whenever there's a boot failure previously.

I don't know coding, you do. Also, my manjaro's grub quite messed up at the moment, with vanilla-grub, clear-grub, upstream-grub, fedora-grub and ubuntu-grub. But mainly, I cannot get my manjaro to bork up, not easy to get any linux borked up. And boot failure?! Can you look into the workings and let me know? There are other posts elsewhere too on this BSOD. Thanks.

ps: I don't hibernate. My swap's smaller than my ram (not used for hibernation).

Maybe, but this can very well come from the code, not grub.d files.

No, I won't. It's not me who messed with a highly critical system part source code. Ask those who did.

I do, but I can easily come back from a failure, which has not happened for years.

It doesn't always matter for hibernation. With about 4GB swap you can usually/normally hibernate, even with more RAM than that.

I now have grub-vanilla and will keep it, until grub becomes... grub again.

Messing with grub code is completely out of sense IMHO, when there are no bugs.
And forcing a not tested enough grub on ALL Manjaro users, cannot be more intimidating. Stubbornness has become a badge. Wow! Let's celebrate!

The codes in 10_linux, etc...
But never mind since you are on grub-vanilla, you can't check it out that there are lines in there (fedora-grub) that use boot_indeterminate and boot-success.
I'm not going to talk about hibernation, swap here. Not relevant. Just asking if you hibernate, does it hang. Again you can't test. You don't have fedora-grub.

And if you have 'ubuntu-grub' (used in Manjaro 2.0.4-6), and again you don't have, there's

GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT to make grub menu hidden.
But that's deprecated . Guess what replaces it?
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE !!

Never mind. Looks like we're both wasting our time.

If it was only grub.d files code (Bash), we can read easily. But "they" have been altering source code of the program (C something), which is hard to read (for me).

Forget it...

Thanks a lot for your help.

Are there any downsides to just leaving TLP to disabled state?

TLP is controlling power management/consumption for your system's hardware.
For a desktop consumption may not be so important, but disks (not SSD) may have more wear than needed.
Usually you can blacklist, or configure PM template/model for each set of devices, so you may find a working scenario for your system, if you configure TLP properly. It needs reading and testing from your side. When you find some spare time

Disabling TLP didn't work for me. Thinkpad X1 Extreme with 1 external monitor via Thinkpad USB-C Dock station.
Any suggestions on what logs I need to upload?
