Portable Manjaro SSD boot into Black Screen on Vivobook 15X

I bought a new ASUS Vivobook 15X OLED with AMD Ryzen R5-5600H processor. I plugged my existing portable Manjaro SSD drive and Manjaro boots into a black screen after the ASUS logo. The SSD LED light is flashing so I suppose the OS does load, but the display is black. The Manjaro bootloader (the page where we can choose which OS to boot into) does display properly. Manjaro LiveCD boots perfectly.

Does anyone here have any idea on what could be the cause? How can I solve this issue?

Thank you

These are the drivers currently installed when I boot the portable Manjaro SSD on another PC. I have also tried installing opencl-amd package but it does not help.

Boot into a LIVE ISO and provide outut of

inxi -Fazy

Use the portable SSD on a working PC, boot into it and provide output of the same command.

I would advise removing the video-vesa drivers. Those are for very old graphics hardware and they tend to not work very well with newer hardware.

This is the output of inxi -Fazy of the portable SSD on a working PC.

video-vesa was not installed previously. it was added in the hope it would help.

See if this helpsā€¦

Using an existing system on another/new pc only works out of the box if the old system was using only open source drivers for graphics and wifi. Your old system has nvidiaā€™s proprietary driver installed; remove it first, best to do that on the old system, then try again.

To do so apply with the SSD connected to the working PC:

sudo mhwd -a pci free 0300

and reboot.

I couldnā€™t see that in the settings. But I do find one package nvidia-utils 535.86.05-01 installed in the package manager application. Is it the one that I should remove? Thanks

I got this output. shall I try reboot on the same working PC or the other laptop?

sudo mhwd -a pci free 0300

Just run @Wollie 's command, the utils will/should be removed with all other packages that the nvidia driver depends on.

Itā€™s in Settings under ā€˜Manjaro Settings Managerā€™ >> ā€˜Hardware Configurationā€™

No, that wasnā€™t enough, the nvidia is still there. Your legacy nvidia 390 needs to be removed.
Iā€™m on a legacy 340 nvidia and I keep instructions that I got here from the forum to go back to open source nouveau in case something goes wrong. Adapted to your 390 driver they look like this:

sudo mhwd -r pci video-nvidia-390xx
sudo mhwd -r pci video-linux
#install new nouveau
sudo mhwd -i pci video-linux

Donā€™t run the sequence just yet, lets wait 'till someone a bit sharper than me can confirm this.

I think the driver is not installed. The one in my screeshot earlier is a proprietary driver available but not installed.

sudo mhwd -r pci video-nvidia-390xx ī‚² āœ”
[sudo] simwc ēš„åƆē¢¼ļ¼š
Error: config 'video-nvidia-390xx' is not installed!

Ok. Following the instructions at the link @Wollie posted it should be:

sudo mhwd -r pci nonfree 0300
sudo mhwd -a pci free 0300

Then reboot. Should still work, then move the drive over.

Try on the PC which did not work yet to verify if the the change solves your issue before trying new things.

Sorry if this was confusing but Iā€™d run the commands

on the old PC then move the (now open source) drive over to the new PC.

It still boots into black screen.

This is the output. And Iā€™ve just tried it on the new laptop and it still boots into black screen.
