Is there a way to return to the 550 Nvidia driver after the recent update?

So, 550 from aur worked for some time, but after few recent updates (newer builds of kernel 6.13, other system updates), they’re now have the same problems with waking from sleep …

I’ll try the open kernel module with 570 userspace, if that will not work either i’ll have to replace that junky piece of hardware with something better supported, probably from AMD.

It makes me wonder how many of the usability “problems” that users experience are instead related to incorrect nvidia configurations.

On balance, I also have had near-zero problems with nvidia 570 : the system runs nvidia-wayland-kde (testing branch) with a 3070 Ti and two DP displays.

Plasma controlled brightness, night light, and suspend, all work great, and I have so far not had any problems with black screens.

The nvidia-wayland-kde experience has not been 100% error-free, but on balance, it has been excellent… I found Chromium unusable on 550 (I think this might be GTK-on-KDE related, and I haven’t re-tested on 570), and there is some random infrequent flashing of the Webstorm menu bar on 570 if I have a dev server running, but its not enough for me to switch distro altogether.

I’m just curious. How did you install those packages. I’d expect there would be conflicts with already installed nvidia packages which your kernel depends on.

Just remove linux614-nvidia-570xx, nvidia-utils-570xx and install other ones that you built, easy?

What's a legacy driver? | NVIDIA

Legacy GPUs are older-generation NVIDIA GPUs which are no longer supported in the regular NVIDIA Unified UNIX Graphics Driver. Instead, these GPUs will continue to be supported through special “Legacy GPU” drivers

The 470.xx driver supports the following set of GPUs.

NVIDIA GPU product Device PCI ID
GeForce GTX 780 1004
GeForce GTX 780 1007

Thanks for this post, just catching it now as the site doesn’t seem to email when posts are made. I’ll have to check to see if my Manjaro install has the 470.xx driver . . . in addition to nouveau.

My “solution” to this problem is in process of assembling a new ATX box from parts . . . to move up on out of “legacy” machine and into something just behind the current wave . . . . Had some issues with the bundled cpu not having graphics at all . . . so . . . again, problems with “graphics” . . . .

To check details of available GPU drivers

mhwd -l -d --pci

Perhaps you need to change your user profile settings to reflect that preference.

Done, thank you. In many other forums when you reply to a thread, or if you just want to follow a conversation, there is the option to “track” or “watch” at the bottom of the particular thread, makes it easy to do . . . .

You mean… something like the TRACKING button at the bottom of this and virtually every thread? I agree, that’s handy; it controls notifications within the forum; “Muted” is useful to avoid topics you have no interest in, for example.

As I understand it, email notifications are effectively disabled by default in Discourse (the forum software) though other defaults are possible via Admin – I suppose privacy would be among the reasons it isn’t enabled by default.

I recall setting the frequency of my email notifications to longer than usual because they can become annoying at times, but it’s a matter of preference.

Indeed, looks like on this thread “tracking” is flagged, but that still requires stopping by the forum and logging in to see the notifications on various threads. In this thread it seemed like almost a week went by before there was a retort to my post . . . .

I’ve got the email thing set up, might have to adjust a bit . . . as there were all previous posts included along with yours . . . . My life is like a 3D Chess game right now, lots of “asymmetry” . . . from all kinds of asymmetricality.

It really isn’t that difficult to tap on the button and change it to “Watching”:

I don’t know how it would work any other way. Of course, that’s where your email notification preferences become relevant.

After four years, I’m glad you finally got that sorted.

In my defense, in my apparent four year tenure with Manjaro, overall I like it because it is “rolling” but quite “stable” and has needed comparatively little attention to keep it running . . . so hardly need to post here in the forum. Therefore the fine points of setting up the account weren’t required.

I did have a couple days back a “dependency” problem that pacman wasn’t able to work around, I checked the forum and found the solution. No need to watch or track that thread . . . we must be moving on, etc.
