Is it possible to retrieve data or reboot is the only option?

Hello everyone!! I recently started using manjaro( first time user). There was an update a week ago around 5 to 6gb so i left my laptop open and came after an hour, my laptop was shut down. When i open it say Error: file ‘/boot/vmlinuz-5.15-X86-64’ not found you need to load the kernel first press any key to continue

I use dual system along with windows 10
when i click on advanced manjaro option it has two option 1.manjaro something 64bit 2. manjaro something 64bit initramfs along with E= edit C= grub command.

There is same question with solution to it but somehow i am not able to understand it and where and how to insert the commands. https://forum.manjaro.org/t/error-file-boot-vmlinuz-5-12-x86-64-not-found-you-need-to-load-the-kernel-first/67278/2

If possible i want to retrieve my data
Thank you in advance.

Welcome to Manjaro! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

  1. Please read the information behind this link. It will help you to post necessary information. [HowTo] Provide System Information
  2. Please press the three dots below your post and then press the :pencil2:
  • If you give us information about your system, we can see what we’re talking about and make better suggestions.
  • You can do this by using inxi in a terminal or in console.
inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width
  • Personally identifiable information such as serial numbers and MAC addresses are filtered out by this command
  • Presenting the information in this way allows everyone to be familiar with the format and quickly find the items they need without missing anything.
  1. Copy the output from inxi (including the command) and paste it into your post.
  • To make it more readable, add 3 backticks ``` on an extra line before and after the pasted text.

You can also use Maxi

to collect information about the boot process. This works,

  • when you are in your running system (with CTRL+ALT+F2).
  • And also in a live environment

:point_right: It seems your kernel is missing after a partial update

  • You have to reinstall your kernel using a live manjaro
  • Use chroot to get into the system
  • Then re-run the update

To give more specific instructions, it is necessary to provide inxi output

i made it easier for you:

  1. boot into a manjaro usb - download manjaro iso, flash it onto usb and boot it
  2. open terminal and run this command:
    sudo manjaro-chroot -a
  3. run update again:
    pacman-mirrors -f 5 && pacman -Syyu
  4. if there were some update issue, post the errors here, together with the formated output from these commands:
    inxi -Fazy
    mhwd-kernel -li
    mhwd -l
    mhwd -li

so did you ran also the update command? did everyhting went well with the updates?
Can you boot now normally into your install, since you mark this post as Solved?

Yes my manjaro has restored back it was and also ran the update command first was around 1gb updated closed and came back.
Again there was this 3gb update.

Just now opened my laptop now i cannot find the dual system option(my windows is gone) :sob::sob:

thats ok, dont worry, follow these steps:

  1. boot again into the live usb and enter chroot:
    sudo manjaro-chroot -a
    run update again:
    pacman-mirrors -f 5 && pacman -Syyu
  2. uninstall graphics:
    sudo mhwd -r video-modesetting
    sudo mhwd -r pci video-linux
  3. uninstall kernel:
sudo mhwd-kernel -r linux515 - if you get some error, cant uninstall kernel, ignore it…
  4. install kernels:
    sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux515
    sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux516
  5. install graphics:
    sudo mhwd -i pci video-linux
    sudo mhwd -i video-modesetting
we will install nvidia drivers when youre back in your system, just in case…
  6. run these commands:
    update-grub
    mkinitcpio -P
    exit
    systemctl reboot
  7. thats it, you should be now able to boot into your system, when everything went well and youre in your system, open terminal and run this command:
sudo mhwd -i pci video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime - this will install the nvidia drivers
  8. reboot your pc

should i ignore this one also?

try again with this without the sudo:
mhwd -r video-modesetting
pay attention to the command, write it exactly it is here
if it still doesnt work, ignore this command and continue with the others

still the same thing my windows 10 option is not showing, when i switch on my laptop it directly opens manjaro

so you run all the commands? and now you can boot into manjaro?

Yes i can run manjaro but my windows 10 gone missing

ok then open terminal and run this command:
sudo update-grub
and copy the formated output here
then reboot
