Inxi error: Use of uninitialized value $split[10] in pattern match (m//) at /usr/bin/inxi line 25175

I’ll check back in a few days, since nobody has posted the data I require, there’s no point in my wasting my time here.

You don’t need to post ‘no problems here’ because you will either trigger one of these issues or you won’t, the only cases that are interesting and helpful are the ones that trigger the issues. I can’t trigger it either, thus, I cannot resolve it since I don’t know what the data looks like that is creating the issue.

@Carpenter, @anon59284200

@h2-1 is inxi developer, while he is here please consider to re-read his posts and if you want to fix your errors, consider to post the info that he asks for.

If you think that the info he asks for is too private, than, as I see, he accepts PM, so you can try to use PM to him also.

Do not answer me, consider to answer him as he is the only master of inxi, not me and probably nobody else.

@h2-1 you requested info from me last night after I was in bed. I need to work today and have other things to do before I will have a chance to get on my computer and post the info you requested. I am replying from my phone so that you know I’m not ignoring you.

ben81, excellent, perfect, injecting your data into my pinxi dev version duplicates the bug, that is generally all that’s required to fix it, since now I can track it down to where it actually is happening by looking at all the live debugger output.

Your issue will be fixed shortly in pinxi, next inxi that is, the other one I’m still waiting on, can’t resolve that ps wwaux data issue until I see the data.

This was a stupid mistake, mine, I was updating an inxi wide type of data, and I copy and pasted that same block to all the features that use it, but raid uses a slightly different method since it’s far more complicated internally.

This is 100% my error, and would have impacted all users always with hardware raid and using -Rxxy or -Fxxy or more extra data options, including -Fay

I’d like to get the first thread starter issue also handled since that’s a similar failure though I believe that’s a changed syntax since that logic has not been touched as far as I know.

This is resolved in current pinxi: wget -O pinxi smxi.org/pinxi if you want to check it for yourself, but the second I understood the error it was trivial to fix it.

Thanks for following through, that’s how issues get fixed in inxi, you have data I don’t normally run.

In this case, I’m leaving those debugger data types marked clearly as containing hardware raid pci data, so the debugger section makes it very clear that’s a good one to run if I am testing changes.

This was an inxi bug, 100%. Thanks for helping to get it solved.

As an aside, the bug was not at all related to the lspci refactor, which was my initial guess/fear, this was just a dumb copy/paste bug on my part, which I doubt I even remember doing to be honest, it was just some mindless update of some code that I didn’t think twice about. In this case, it did require thinking twice, lol.

I would have found this one, but by chance, all the servers I have remote access to all run software raid, not hardware.

@Carpenter , your issue can be solved but only with your data, that’s why you see it only on one machine.

On the machine that shows this error, run: ps wwaux

and paste the output here. I can’t predict in your situation what the cause is since it’s going to be in the data.

After the above posts i updated Manjaro. After this update the Error in inxi has disappeared on this Machine. The posts above was before update.

[rich@rich-pc ~]$ pacman -Qi inxi | grep Ver
Version : 3.3.07.1-1
Verifiziert durch : Signatur

inxi works perfectly for me now.

[rich@rich-pc ~]$ inxi -v
CPU: Dual Core Intel Core2 Duo E8400 (-MCP-) speed/min/max: 2093/2003/3003 MHz Kernel: 5.10.70-1-MANJARO x86_64 Up: 22m
Mem: 1841.0/3928.3 MiB (46.9%) Storage: 931.51 GiB (37.1% used) Procs: 181 Shell: Bash inxi: 3.3.07

Thread maybe can be closed, if H2-1 doesent need more information.

So that was some external dependency issue.

For the stats, Output now after Update:

On this one, I can’t be sure if it’s manjaro forum software creating linewraps in the ps output or if it’s actually there. I should have specified ps wwaux > ps1.txt to avoid that issue.

There is an issue, even if it was short term and vanished, in that, when faced with something inxi didn’t understand, it did not handle it internally but rather perl had to print an error.

Can you confirm that there are line-breaks or no linebreaks in your ps wwaux by sending that output to file and then attaching that file here? Or better yet, attach the resulting file to https://pastebin.com/ and give the link. It’s too difficult to know with real user data if forum software is modifying the output.

The error corresponds to the output, there is a bug in the ps that manjaro is shipping. Despite using '‘ww’, which means “unlimited width”, this version of ps is still wrapping very long lines, and that is causing the error. Both samples above contained this linewrap, and this means ps has the bug. This is the second core tool in a month or so that I’ve discovered significant bugs with, that is somewhat discouraging.

If you can pastebin the file, I can use that to file a bug report with ps. Also if you can run: ps --version
so I can see what version it is that would be helpful.

The cause of this is easy to bypass, but this should NOT have happened, ever, it’s not about the data having changed, it’s about ps failing to respect the ww no linewrap command and wrapping anyway, which then made inxi try to use a part of the line that should have existed but doesn’t.

But I would like to confirm with ps --version the version number, and the pastebin file to make absolutely sure no other software inserts linewraps.

wget -O pinxi smxi.org/pinxi && chmod +x pinxi

will show the workaround, which is just confirming that the ps line actually contains the item it should be containing, that’s a total hack, but this is a total ps bug, which worries me.

Both of these issues are handled in just released inxi 3.3.08. Thanks to manjaro for helping find the issues. Note that the ps failure to wrap is very very similar to the lspci issue of truncating line content in a very bad way, and makes me somewhat wonder if both issues were created by the same person or same changeset to those core tools.

Thank you! inxi works normally again with both -Fxx and -Fazy.

Thanks for supplying the required data, in both cases it was necessary to confirm what was happening and why.

Here is the Data @pastebin

Unfortunately, the true data came too late. In the future, I will remember to never get anything from pastes in a forums software that can and in this case, did, introduce random line breaks.

The plus side is that ps is NOT introducing random line breaks and failing to respect ww no linewrap, so there is no ps bug. I will have to add that caveat to changelog.

The error you initially posted should in theory be handled by the fix, but the cause of your error remains totally unknown.

If the future, I will always ask for pastebin of > to file output, since the syntax and layout is critical to find these errors. I already knew that you can’t ever rely on forum software to not break or alter output, but I got lazy in this case. This is a good reminder that no post in a forum software with code or output can ever be considered trustworthy, but for linewraps to be introduced in code blocks… that’s very bad. But I can’t fix it, so that’s life.

The cause of your actual break remains in this case unknown, and the fix will probably correct it, but for totally unknown reasons. I’m going to guess your subshell created hard linewraps, but that data can only be found with the full raw data from the inxi debugger, but that’s too late in this case since I believe the issue already resolved on an update before this fix.

But in the future, I’ll remember to never get user pasted in data from output, it has to always be redirected to file, then that file uploaded to pastebin. Note that you can’t even use github to upload text files, it will reformat them too.

Therefore, I’ve marked this solution as the answer:
