Interrupted update, Xorg startup issues and graphics driver installation

Initially I had a update (with pacman -Syu) running, that crashed without me being present. The computer was then shut down with the off button (after unsuccessful trail of REISUB).

When booting up, Xorg doesn’t start, but I can start it with running

xstart

Then the system seemed intact, apart from sometimes having graphics bugs.

After a couple of days of on-and-off trying to fix this, I am now in a state where I could really need some help, because I can’t call what I have to fix in which order and how.

I thought it was a graphics driver issue and removed video-nvidia in order to check whether Nouveau driver fixes the bugs and then maybe reinstall video-nvidia later.

sudo mhwd -r pci video-nvidia

Reinstalling nvidia drivers with

sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300

doesn’t complete:

I am using kernel version 5.10 since the update. Might it be that mhwd still thinks it needs 5.9, because it says: error: target not found: linux59-nvidia-470xx ?

I am also concerned now that the initial interrupted pacman update left e.g. a corrupted package database behind.

Some output, that might be needed. What else is important?

Those are the questions that I have right now:

  1. How can I check if my pacman databases really are intact?
The following didn’t find anything. Would it find problems that stem from an interrupted update or might be likely from my mhwd error?
[ho@Holger ~]$ pacman -Dkv
Root : /
Conf File : /etc/pacman.conf
DB Path : /var/lib/pacman/
Cache Dirs: /var/cache/pacman/pkg/
Hook Dirs : /usr/share/libalpm/hooks/ /etc/pacman.d/hooks/
Lock File : /var/lib/pacman/db.lck
Log File : /var/log/pacman.log
GPG Dir : /etc/pacman.d/gnupg/
Targets : None
No database errors have been found!
  1. What might be the cause for the failing of the mhwd driver reinstall?
[ho@Holger ~]$ mhwd -l --pci

I would be very grateful for any advice you might have!
Thanks for reading this!

AFAIK 5.9 is EOL, so you would need to remove it, now that you have 5.10 installed.

Would removing the unused kernel change what mhwd tries to install? I guess I should do it anyway for security reasons, right?

AFAIK, when mhwd installs a driver, it does so for all installed drivers. Since 5.9 is long EOL, there is no package for it in the repositories now.

Ah nice! I tried to remove linux59, but linux-latest seems to depend on it. Should I delete that too, or can I change it to point to linux510?

It was recommended to do sudo pacman -Rcsnu linux-latest. Will I get a new (functioning) linux-latest after the next update?

I don’t see any linux-latest package in the repositories, so i guess it has be dropped.
You can also remove it, linux510 should not be affected.

The issue was just as you said fixed by removing the EOL kernel.
It was removed together with linux-latest.

Thank you!
