Intermittent trouble with music playback

So I’m having, since 13. May update, intermittent trouble with music playback (well and sound in general) … Sometimes it works, other times it does not… Audio is played via USB to DAC –
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 17ae:0003 NAD Electronics NAD USB Audio

Using either VLC or Elementary has … strange behaviour… Sometimes the song will progress 00:00, 00:01, 00:02, etc… Other times it will show as playing but stay at 00:00 …
Youtube playback also suffers from this via Brave browser.

Same goes for Apple music via Firefox (music.apple.c…)
Playing a song will show as playing, but stops at 00:00 - This I think is done through Widevine or w/e it’s called… But it behaves the same as VLC, which is why I am now befuddled…

This has not been an issue before the 13. May update, and updating to 23. May release did not help.

I will make a separate thread, but just asking here in case it is a known issue (although I cannot seem to see any reports of this so far).

The “volume mouse scroll” behaviour is also utterly laggy and sometimes unresponsive … the 0-100% overlay bar that pops up midscreen to show what % you adjusted it to, was snappy and responsive before. Now it is laggy and responds maybe 1-2 seconds after adjustment by mousescrollwheel.

Apart from that, everything else is working fine!

Edit:

The lag was caused by some sort of failure restoring pulseaudio I guess? Killing pulseaudio stopped the volume adjustment lag AND gave me sound back again… Rebooting didn’t initially help at all…

This is from journalctl, and was spamming during the volume lag + missing sound

And hey presto, both brave browser and VLC have playback again…

Following journalctl while trying out different playbacks to see if I can reproduce this, so far only this has jumped out as a maybe something:

if you have pulse issues, install pipewire, reboot and test… there are more people who had audio issue after update and this solved them…

sudo pacman -Ru --nodeps pulseaudio pulseaudio-equalizer pulseaudio-jack pulseaudio-lirc pulseaudio-rtp pulseaudio-zeroconf pulseaudio-bluetooth pulseaudio-pa pulseaudio-alsa pulseaudio-ctl manjaro-pulse && sudo pacman -S manjaro-pipewire

reboot

Watched ?v=HxEXMHcwtlI on YT. The sollution you provided was sufficient for me to look up, decide and implement within … well not minutes, but the same day. Thank you for providing an alternative to pulse, no shade on pulse as a sound server but when it interfeers with my music playback and device using my linux installation for this, well, that is really a no-brainer for me.

That said, this is an AMD system, x570 ASUS board. CROSSHAIR VIII HERO (WI-FI) to be exact. It might also be an issue with the firmware on the DAC (which is an NAD C390DD amplifier, digital with USB inputs which i am currently using for sound) There are available updates for the sound amplifier (I am current on ASUS bios.) that I might not have implemented, so I will pursue those… although, old hardware and well, firmware intended for new OS / Use are often disregarded… Hopefully one, or the other (pipewire) will keep me content

I’ll mark this as solved, as another sollution would probably not be feasible?

Thank you @brahma .
