Install video-nvidia on fresh Manjaro 25 GNOME install then sudo hangs before password

I wanted to do a fresh install for a few different reasons. Tried that this week and every time I install video-nvidia, it leads to system instability.

There are more symptoms than just sudo hanging, file manager also take a long time to show files and I lost the buttons for suspend shutdown and reboot in the power off menu. Clicking logout in that menu does nothing.

I have tried starting from scratch with a fresh install many times at this point and there were additional symptoms when I made other setup modifications, but in the interest of getting to a shorter error reproduction, I narrowed down what steps I was taking and have reported only symptoms that reoccur with these steps.

  • Fresh install of Manjaro 25 Minimal GNOME
  • Reboot after install finishes
  • Go to TTY from login page when the system starts up, bypassing GNOME desktop
  • Run these commands:
sudo pacman -Syu

mhwd --listinstalled

sudo mhwd --remove pci video-linux

sudo mhwd --install pci video-nvidia

sudo inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width >> inxi-post-nvidia-nstall.txt

sudo reboot

After reboot:

sudo inxi --admin-verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width >> post-reboot-inxi.txt

nvidia-smi

At this point I thought I was in the clear on my last run through. A sudo command had worked. I went to reboot the system just for good measure and because that had been a problem before. When I clicked reboot in the power menu nothing happened. I opened a terminal and tried sudo reboot and it hung before asking for the password. I went back to the power menu and ‘reboot’ ‘shutdown’ and ‘power off’ were all missing. The ‘logout button did nothing’

Here’s the last inxi after rebooting. The inxi from immediately after installing video-nvidia is in this gist for the sake of brevity of the post.

Because that system wasn’t really usable, I’ve done another fresh install and not installed video-nvidia but I’m just using this to get along in the meantime. I would like to get to a stable system with video-nvidia installed. I am willing to re-install from fresh again for additional testing but I probably won’t have a chance to try anything until tomorrow.

Quick tip:

Some inxi parameters are now deprecated and could disappear from the command at any time. The most effective usage for system information is described below.

This will achieve much the same result, with less typing.

inxi -zv8 > post-reboot-inxi.txt

or, use two >> to append output to the same text file.

inxi -zv8 >> post-reboot-inxi.txt

I’m sure someone will help when they are able.

Regards.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes more indepth information is usually needed;

It’s best to ask your system directly. :eyes:

Output of the inxi command with appropriate parameters will achieve this (naturally, formatted according to forum requirements) and will generally be more useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form:

inxi -zv8

Try adding nvidia-drm.modset=1 to the kernel parameters and use Wayland. nouveau worked, but not usable, as you said. I would say KMS needs to be enabled.

FYI,

Starting from nvidia-utils 560.35.03-5, DRM defaults to enabled

NVIDIA - ArchWiki

Disabling the integrated graphics in BIOS settings seems to have resolved this and I’m on wayland now because that’s the default.

GDM - ArchWiki

As of GDM 42 and NVIDIA driver 510, GDM defaults to Wayland.

After rebooting and confirming that the integrated graphics no longer showed up in an inxi, I did a fresh install and after reboot followed these steps in tty to configure nvidia drivers and wayland

  1. sudo mhwd --remove pci video-linux
  2. sudo mhwd -i pci video-nvidia
  3. gsettings set org.gnome.mutter experimental-features '["kms-modifiers"]'
  4. modified /etc/mkinitcpio.conf to add the modules nvidia, nvidia_modeset, nvidia_drm, and nvidia_uvm
  5. sudo mkinitcpio -P
  6. sudo pacman -Syu --needed xorg-xwayland libxcb egl-wayland
  7. sudo reboot
