Install Manjaro KDE and keep Home partition from Kubuntu 20.04?

I have Home on a separate partition. I want to install Manjaro and keep my Home.
Is this a good idea or a bad idea?

You should delete the .kde hidden files in your home directory.

As @Keruskerfuerst mentioned it’s not really recommendable to keep the old /home partition completely as there could occur issues when first starting applications with the old config data but as long as you install Manjaro with a different user name it should not be harmful at all. Don’t login using the old (still existing) user afterwards in this case but you still could copy some of the old files or at least have a look into old settings and configuration data which could be pretty useful. Just tell the installer not to format the /home partition and mount it as /home.

What specifically do you want to keep? You can backup kde themes with transfuse. If you need files, you should be able to copy them after install. But i’d create a manjaro specific home, then you can try adding another user to use the ubuntu home.

I like the way my panel is configured, and I also want to keep my Google Chrome profile, because of the logins. The rest of the config data can go.
Is this feasible? If so, how to do it?

Just compare the new configs with the old and try to adjust the new configs, accordingly. This is safer than just to copy the old configs as you could miss some details which are (potentially) different between Manjaro and Ubuntu.

Back up old home ( spare drive ) new install manjaro with new home and then take what your want from you old home … no fuss no mess

The panel can be done with the transfuse. chrome config data is stored in /home/(user)/.config/chromium or /home/jecks-thinkcentre/.config/google-chrome just copy the folder over and you should be good.

You should really delete .kde.

And try if the desktop works.

.thunderbird and .mozilla belong to Thunderbird and Firefox and both should work as before.

So if I want to try my luck with a Transfuse backup, how would I do that? It seems to be an Arch-based app, not sure how to use it on Kubuntu to backup what I got now.

You can easily copy or rsync your home to another folder.
