When logging in can't access apps, only terminal

Hello everybody,

I ran into some bug today. When I logged in everything seems normal, until manjaro loads. When I log in for a second or two the screen turns black and then in comes back.

Firstly, my wallpaper is gone. I only see the standard manjaro wallpaper. Secondly, there are no more apps (I used shortcuts to open the terminal). A similar problem occurred to me a few days ago and it was magically fixed when I created a new user (when new user was created the main account worked normally), but now this trick doesn’t work. I also just realize that on the terminal it says ‘‘zsh: corrupt history file /home/vajinbuu/.zhistory’’.

edit: I don’t have the zsh error anymore, but still have the issue of no icons.
Can someone help solve this problem?

Here are my specs:

What did you do? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

It sounds like there was file corruption at least with your primary user account files.

Did you search the internet to see how to resolve that?

No matter what caused the problem, it sounds like using the new user account and copying files (as long as they’re not corrupt) from the old one would be the best course of action.

thing when i created the new user i deleted it at the end. I did search for answers on the internet but after a few tries I came here to ask.

they all gave some commands like this

cd ~
mv .zsh_history .zsh_history_bad
strings .zsh_history_bad > .zsh_history
fc -R .zsh_history
rm ~/.zsh_history_bad

but it didn’t work for me.

This is indicative of something having gone wrong with your Plasma configuration. Unfortunately, this does happen from time to time. Two weeks ago I lost all usability of my Plasma desktop, as you can read on this thread, along with how I’ve eventually solved it with the help of the community.

However, if you got the default Manjaro wallpaper back, then you were lucky, because then that means that Plasma was able to reset itself to the default settings. Not everyone is that lucky.

That said, considering that you’re also having problems with your zsh history and that the file was corrupted while it’s only a plain text file, there may be something else going on here. Either you had an unclean shutdown — e.g. by pressing the reset button on the computer housing, or by a power outage — or you may have a hardware problem going on, and in that case, the SSD drive would be a likely culprit.

Right-click the desktop, choose “Configure Desktop and Wallpaper”, and check whether your desktop is set to “Desktop” or “Folder View”. In the “Desktop” view, there are no icons on the desktop.

In “Folder View”, it’ll show whatever is in the designated folder as icons on your desktop — by default, this will be ~/Desktop, but you can pick any other folder if you wish.

Just nuke ~/.zhistory — it’s only a plain text file — and start building up a new history file.

thanks for your reply

The problem solved itself. I went to sleep and the next morning it worked like normal.

and you are right sometimes when manjaro crashes and nothing works i just shut it down manually (by pressing reboot button or by the shut down button). The permanent freezes only happen sometimes when i play on steam.
