Headphones are not detected

this morning my laptop stops recognize any headphone from jack input.

Already tested

I read different posts and did some test without success:

  • moving ~/.config/pulse to pulse.backup and reboot
  • run alsactl restore with the following output

The manufacturer’s website recommends using this:

echo "options snd-hda-intel model=headset-mode" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf`

Please note, you will need to reboot for the changes to take effect

After reboot, check pacmd list-sinks again to see if you now have a port for analog-output-headphones in addition to analog-output-speaker

If the Headphone output is still not detected, please post response to:

sudo alsa-info.sh --upload

I tried the manufacturer’s recommendation but now I have also the Analog Stereo Duplex unavailable.

ALSA data is showing 2 modprobe options

I suggest you use this command to find the non-recommended option and remove it

grep -n snd /etc/modprobe.d/*.conf

I tried the following without success:

  • remove only snd_hda_intel: model=dell-headset-multi and reboot
  • remove only snd_hda_intel: model=headset-mode and reboot
  • remove both and reboot

Now I have the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file with just the snd_hda_intel: model=dell-headset-multi cause is the only option that enable double duplex and, apparently, detect headset microphone.

My status now is the following:

Modprobe option dell-headset-multi is still making a mess of your audio system

It is creating a third microphone input

but you only have an internal mic and 1 3.5mm jack for an external mic so a third microphone connection is useless

and it is also creating an ALSA control in !!Amixer output

In the place where I would expect to see the control for the Headphone level

Please remove this modprobe option and reboot system
and then get alsa-info data again with no modprobe options

I also suggest you install package alsa-tools
and run this command to check the headset jack

sudo hdajacksensetest --card=0

Use this command with headset plugged in and unplugged to see if it detects either the headphones or headset microphone
and post the response here for when the headset is plugged in

As you suggested, I also removed dell-headset-multi from my config and rebooted.
Now my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file is empty.

I run sudo hdajacksensetest --card=0 both with and without jack inserted and I alsways get the same result:

I tried with different headphones to be sure the problem is not on the device but I got always the same result.

I did a new test connecting the headset to the jack port of an usb-c hub.
I have the same output than laptop’s jack, so I think is not related to the port.

I solved!
The last firmware update was not complete.
I reinstalled it from a source provided by the manufacturer and now sound is back.
