I can't install Manjaro with Optimus mode enabled

My hard drive currently has Dual Boot with Windows 10 and Manjaro.
I want to install Manjaro on my laptop, which can be used with the Optimus System of Nvidia (i7 6700 and GTX 1060), but the screen turned black when I tried to install Manjaro using Optimus so I wasn’t able to install it. I tried to install it using only the Nvidia card (discrete mode) and the non-free drivers and everything was perfect, I could install it and use it with no problems.

But I was wonder if there is any possibility to turn to the Optimus mode and use Manjaro because I will use Linux only for programming and daily use so I don’t want to waste such amount of energy that the Nvidia GPU need. The problem is taht after selecting the Optimus mode, I can’t even see the login screen. The screen goes black after the OS choice in the GRUB.
I tried before with other Linux distributions as Ubuntu and Debian but I had the same problem.

Where was that option?
Have you tried bumblebee (with both cards enabled)?

I can switch the graphic mode between MShybrid (Optimus mode) and Discrete (only Nvidia GPU) in BIOS.
I can’t try bumblebee with both cards enabled because the screen is black and I can’t login into Manjaro.
I’m sorry if I ask obvious thing but I’m new into Linux and I don’t have a big knowledge about it.

But that is what you are asking for help…

You can try changing your driver from your running system.
You have to understand that this

happened because you had not changed to the proper driver configuration.
You may try

  • Boot in your Optimus BIOS setting
  • At the Grub menu, edit to go to TTY
  • Login TTY with your user credentials and run
sudo pacman -Syyu
sudo mhwd -a pci free 0300

Reboot to … troubleshoot your problems
If/when you get to black screen, go to TTY and

  • Try to start
    startx
Report any errors, if it fails.
  • Check/Start your Display Manager.
sudo systemctl status lightdm
sudo systemctl start lightdm

Report any errors, if it fails

  • Get error info
cat /var/log/Xorg.?.log

Post your errors with some info

inxi -SMGxxxz
mhwd -li
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/*.conf
cat /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf
cat /etc/bumblebee/xorg.conf.nvidia

And most of all, keep calm!..
You can always revert your changes and go back to your previous setup.

I tried to do what you recommend, but anything works and I couldn’t save the logs.

Now I am booting Manjaro with the Live USB, and when I write the command dmesg, everything is fine except for two things:

[ 4.053621] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: fifo: read fault at 0000006000 engine 1f [PHYSICAL] client 08 [GPC0/PE_2] reason 0d [REGION_VIOLATION] on channel -1 [0000000000 unknown]
[ 92.699455] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: gr: intr 00000040

I don’t know the meaning of that but I think is something related to the graphic driver and I remember seeing this line while booting Manjaro.
Also, when I write the systemctl status lightdm command, it says:

Unit lightdm.service could not be found.

Here there are more info about my laptop:

You have tagged the topic with xfce, that’s why the command I gave you.
It seems you installed Plasma.
The relevant command would be

sudo systemctl start sddm

but you didn’t try startx to get some error, or… login.
Or what OS version have you installed?
Have you booted to the installation or your Live installer?
You should find xorg logs to see the errors.

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Before reinstalling Manjaro, I used the startx command on the tty, but it created a loop in the login screen so I was not able to pass this screen.

Yesterday, I reinstalled Manjaro Manjaro KDE Edition (17.1.12) using Optimus mode, so I leave the drivers as free. But after installing it, the screen was again black.

Now, I am looking at the logs in the Live installer. I have already updated the system too.

Using the systemctl status sddmeverything seems to be ok:

sddm.service - Simple Desktop Display Manager

Using the cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log command everything seems to be ok too, but there are a lot of things and I can’t accurately check if there is a problem. I can paste all the log if it is useful.

Obviously potentially helpful.

I’m sorry. Thanks for your patience.
