I tried this command, but it didn’t seem to work

echo 3 | tee /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches

total used free shared buff/cache available

After restart

Three minutes after opening the Chrome browser

Solution

I don’t know how to modify the solution
However, after my research, I found that it is the TMPFS setting problem. By default, it uses half of the memory size
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/637325/very-high-memory-usage-with-nothing-running
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Tmpfs
Refer to this section. After modifying the size, the test is normal

Looks normal to me. Don’t panic.

Yep what @Yochanan says…

Just imagine: You run a chrome and that should be fast. What is the preferred place to read and store? The Disk or the RAM? Of course the RAM… unused RAM is useless RAM and Chrome does it heavy. No doubt, that is the reason why it is fast.

Looks “normal” to someone who thinks bloated systems are normal! Manjaro is sorely lagging behind much more efficient Linux distros, such as TinyCore Linux, which can run on a system with only 46 MB of RAM!

Yes, you read that right, 46 megabytes.

:raised_hands: "The future of desktop Linux is here" :raised_hands:

Yes, I read this article.
However, my system will be full of memory after running for nearly an hour, which has never happened in my years of using manjaro.

Solution in search of a problem?

Are you noticing slowdowns and/or heavy use of swap?

Have you used any “crawls” along the filesystem tree, such as searches, large directory listings and navigation, rsync, etc? (Yes, even rsync via Timeshift or to a separate location.)

I remember the Android phone said don’t look at ram, but for PC, this growth is too terrible. Maybe it’s my configuration problem

Perhaps this article will help you understand Linux memory usage.

I didn’t do IO exchange
I try the htop command to find out what memory is used, but this can only be seen by the user. For the kernel, I can’t see it.

Thank you for sharing the article
For me, I inquired about the command that there was no read-write hard disk in the background. For 10G memory, I can’t find where it went, and the system will become very stuck when the memory is full, so I think this may be my operation problem.

I’m asking because it matters why you’re trying to unravel “memory usage”.

Did you pursue this because you noticed your system was slowing down and crashing?

Or did you pursue this because you were curious about the numbers and outputs from running free and ps commands?

I mean this says everything where the RAM left. Close Chrome, drop the cache and you see.

Because the system is slowing down, when I close Google browser, the memory drops a little at that moment, and then rises again at a visible speed.

I used gnome-system-monitor to observe the memory usage of Google browser. It is a stable value. When I close it, the released memory can correspond to the memory it occupies

Whenever you open, write, change a file, it will be cached on the RAM. Same goes for Chrome. Chrome does not release this cache automatically, so the files it opens / preloads etc. That improves the performance of loading websites even if you close chrome. However… as I said… this cache/buffer can be dropped anytime and is done, when needed.

When I shut down the computer, I noticed that he had a red error, but I didn’t see what it was. Then I recalled what I had done recently. I found that I used DKMS to deal with keyboard input problems, but I deleted Linux headers, so I think it may have something to do with this. Now I feel normal after reinstallation。
thank you all

Miraculously, I run this command. echo 3 | tee /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches Before and after running, I check that the memory has not changed

Sorry, please explain (without looking at how much RAM your system is using) what is the problem?

The memory is full. I can’t find what process is occupying it

Something like this
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/5179550/memory-used-but-i-cant-see-process-that-used-it-debian

I think this is a problem, not cached by the system

Disk access is always cached - that is how Linux works.

If the system only has 100M then 45M of RAM is efficient - it is a waste if the system has 1G or more - again that depends on your use case.

Ram is not a standby accessory - it is an efficiency accessory and should be used as much as possible. Why equip your system with 64G RAM then trim the system to use 100M - that is a waste of money and resources.

I cannot understand the obsession with getting as much unused RAM as possible unless it is on a low-spec micro device like a PLC or a Raspberry Pi.
