I can't boot into Manjaro its 5-13-1

When I ty to boot from grub I get–end kernal panic not syncing vfs: unable to mount root fs on unknown block
The only way I can boot it is if I boot the Fallback manjaro in grub

Hello Jbander,
513 kernel is EOL, you should install another.

If you could boot with the fallback you should install another kernel via ‘mhwd-kernel’.

Use:

mhwd-kernel -l

… to let you show all available kernels.

With:

mhwd-kernel -li

… it shows you all installed kernels.

With:

sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux515

… it will install kernel 5.15. For installing another one you can replace ‘linux515’ with one from the list ‘mhwd-kernel -l’ gives to you.

Kernel 5.15 is the latest stable. It is also recommend to install at least 2 kernels to have one that work when you came to troubles like you have. :grin:

Its also recommend to install at least one LTS (Long Term Support) kernel. Last LTS-Kernel is 5.10. You can install it with same comman like kernel 5.15 above.

On default manjaro always boots the lastest installed kernel. So if you install 5.10 and 5.15 it will try to start with 5.15 automatically on next boot.

inxi -S

… with this you can check which kernel is loaded after reboot.

If you system startet without problems in another kernel as 5.13 you can and should deinstall it with the following command:

sudo mhwd-kernel -r linux513

Good luck! :grinning:

Great information ,I downloaded 5.10, it seemed to go Ok but after rebooting the inxi -S still shows the 5.13 as the automatic next boot. Checking ```
mhwd-kernel -li
`mhwd-kernel -li`
This is the end of my last post , it wouldn’t edit in.`` it shows that I have 513 and 510 but in the grub it only shows the 513.*

Thats because manjaro automatic loads the newest and 5.13 is newer then 5.10.

You should can load 5.10 from grub … The second entry in grub should show all installed kernels.

Edit1:
Its called “Advanced options for Manjaro Linux” :grinning:

… there you can choose kernel 5.10

Normally after update or install a kernel ‘grub’ will be updated. But you can trigger this by your own with this command:

sudo update-grub

So ‘grub’ menu will be refreshed and should also offer other installed kernels.

I have 5.10 5.15 and the old 5.13 installed but the only one that shows up as a choice in grub is 5.13 the one that doesn’t boot up.

Could you please post the output from this command:

cat /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Also please take a look at the Wiki. :grinning:

Ok, as seen in your ‘grub.cfg’ there are 2 manjaro installations on your system.

The first one ( I guess installed on /dev/sda1) is called “Manjaro Linux” where all 3 kernels are installed as you said.

And than installed at ‘/dev/sdb3’ there is a second Manjaro installation called “Manjaro Linux (21.2.0)” in grub. At this second installation only kernel 5.13 is installed.

While you start the second installation it only can load kernel 5.13 and thats the cause ‘inxi -S’ shows kernel 5.13.

So you should go to grub-menu and start “Manjaro Linux” (which is the entry on top) instead of "Manjaro Linux (21.2.0) (which is the entry at bottom).

Both Manjaro linux have 513 show in grub no other kernel.

What is with the 2 other linux installiations? EndeavourOS and MX 21 Wildflower (21)? Do you see these entry in your grub-menu?

If not, go to your bios settings and try to change boot priority to first drive.

If this dont bring you further post the output from this 2 commands:

inxi -Fxxa
lsblk

:grinning:

Yes they are listed in the grub

Please edit you last post and put ```` befor and after the commands output for more readability.

So, you ‘Grubmenu’ is hidden. I guess you know that you only can enter ‘grubmenu’ by pressing ESC while booting. And for your “only 5.13 Kernel is loaded”-problem I only could imagine that you use hibernating instead of shutdown for power off your computer.

Please edit the file ‘/etc/default/grub’. And change this lines:

GRUB_TIMEOUT=5
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden

to

GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu

After that refresh ‘grub’ with this command:

sudo update-grub

and restart you computer with

shutdown -r now

At reboot pay attention if ‘grub-menu’ shows up automaticaly. And is it possible for you to take a picture of your ‘grub-menu’?
