I’ve been considering getting a Windows Hello compatible webcam for my desktop PC, partly because I want a nice webcam, but also because face authetication is really convenient on Windows and other platforms, and I wanted the same experience on Linux.
I looked around to see if there’s support for this sort of thing on Linux and I found Howdy. It seems to work as long as you get a Windows Hello-compatible webcam. On Manjaro, I can get it via the AUR. The thing is, I don’t really know how well it works in practice when compared to Windows or other platforms. So I was hoping I can get opinions here on people who have tried it, or know people who have tried it.
In particular, I use KDE Plasma so I’m especially interested in how well Plasma integrates with it.
If it won’t work or is otherwise not recommended, then maybe I could save some money by getting a regular webcam, and a well supported fingerprint sensor instead.
Also, please spare me the lecture on why it’s not secure as a password. I already understand the risks of biometric authentication, and it’s not applicable to my risk profile. This won’t replace password authentication on first login, and I might add a timeout in PAM for security purposes, but it’s purely for convenience for my personal desktop computer. Being able to not lift a single finger to authenticate for sudo/etc. reasonably securely is an awesome idea.
