How to set up 2 monitors with 2 dedicated GPUs (one for each)

Hey everyone, first time posting here.

A little bit of context. I’m trying to set up a VFIO build with Manjaro. Here’s the output from neofetch.

I have each monitor connected to each GPU (through HDMI). During the initial setup I connected the NVIDIA GPU in the x16 slot and the AMD GPU in the x8 slot (mobo layout). In the BIOS settings (currently F20 version) I’ve selected the x8 slot as the “initial display output” and activated IOMMU and SVM mode (virtualization).

In addition to this I’ve installed the NVIDIA proprietary drivers (version 450.66) following this guide.

My current problem is:

Only my right monitor is working. My left monitor shows a black screen with this:

[ 0.000000] do_IRQ: 1.55 No irq handler for vector
[ 0.000000] do_IRQ: 2.55 No irq handler for vector
[ 0.000000] do_IRQ: 3.55 No irq handler for vector
[ 0.000000] do_IRQ: 4.55 No irq handler for vector
[ 0.000000] do_IRQ: 5.55 No irq handler for vector
[ 0.000000] do_IRQ: 6.55 No irq handler for vector
[ 0.000000] do_IRQ: 7.55 No irq handler for vector
[ 0.000000] do_IRQ: 8.55 No irq handler for vector
[ 0.000000] do_IRQ: 9.55 No irq handler for vector
[ 0.000000] do_IRQ: 10.55 No irq handler for vector

What I’m hoping to be able to do is to have both monitors boot into Manjaro and when I initiate a Windows virtual machine, for it to take control of one of the monitors.

EDIT: To be more precise, this is a video demo of what I’d like to achieve.

I’m new to all this. Any guidance would be tremendous.

Here’s the output from:

Thanks again for any help or comment

I don’t know how to do exactly this but for the basic setup you might want to look at creating a xinerama X config

Thanks for the input! Let me check on the link.

Hey @Takei since the last comment this is what I’ve done:

Since I manually installed the proprietary drivers from NVIDIA I uninstalled those and then I followed the procedure described to install the proprietary ones with mhwd because nouveau didn’t work for the RTX2070S.

I played around with xrandr and now this is the output from xrandr | grep ' connected':

HDMI-A-0 connected primary 2560x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 673mm x 284mm
HDMI-1-0 connected 2560x1080+2560+0 673mm x 284mm

I’ve also activated ACS in my BIOS and now the IOMMU groups for both GPUs are different:

And after reading the docs for xorg, a troubleshooting article from AgentS (I don’t seem to be able to create links, sorry) and the xinarema X config doc, these are the X conf files I’ve created:

After doing this now I see my right monitor black, it’s not projecting anything (no mouse even) but I can still drag windows over there. My left monitor works correctly. So the right one is being detected but it just isn’t showing anything.

Could you expand a bit more on what I could try to get a basic setup working?

I’d appreciate it very much.

Sadly I’ve actually never dealt with something like this before. But looking closer some valuable hints can be gleamed from the description of the youtube video you linked.

I start Linux and X.org using the onboard gpu and display a simple xfce on both monitors(xinerama).
Whenever I feel like playing Windows games I disable the left monitor using xrandr and start qemu which uses the passed-through pcie gpu as vga.

Please do keep in mind though this is a very advanced configuration, likely involving some costum written scripts handling the transition of handing the second monitor to the virtual machine.
Maybe someone else has more experience than me in this department. Which is not hard to be honest.

I think /r/VFIO would be able to help you more as they specialize in this.

They also have a really nice wiki as well.

Thank you both for answering!

To be honest the VFIO set up, I think, should come after I get both monitors working. Sorry if I worded things confusingly.

Yes, my end objective is to have a VFIO build, but right now the more pressing matter would be getting both monitors to work. So for now I think the VFIO build can wait a bit, or at least until I fix the basic monitor setup, like you suggested initially @Takei, which is a great idea.

I’ve read several times the Xinerama part in the multihead article, and TBH I don’t see what am I missing.

The left monitor (which is connected to the AMD GPU) is working correctly, showing everything nicely (resolution and refresh rate are accurate). But the right monitor (which is connected to the NVIDIA GPU) is not working (although is shown as connected), just a black screen, I can seem to drag windows over there but no image is shown, not even the mouse pointer is shown on the right screen. So this confuses me a lot.

Is it perhaps that the Xinerama part in the article is outdated? I’m quite new to Manjaro and Linux in general, so I’m not very knowledgeable in how up to date any of the topics we discuss is.

For example, I can see this warning below the Xinarema section, perhaps there’s a more up to date version somewhere else?:

This article or section is out of date.
Reason: This section contains outdated information, mostly specific to Xinerama. (Discuss in Talk:Multihead#

Not sure where to go from here. If there’s any other console output I can provide or any other file I can modify or anything you think I can try, please do let me know, I’d really appreciate it.

Oh I just noticed something else. On the left monitor when I scroll up or down there is a screen tear in the middle of the screen. So not everything is great on the left monitor. It doesn’t seem to happen all the time, just sporadically.

Both monitors are the same brand and model: LG 25" LED Ultrawide (25um58)
