The default program for opening executable files is Kate and I'm unable to install PlayOnLinux.
Not sure why it won’t include the second part, but I am unable to install PlayOnLinux. It says the default program used to open the executable file is Kate.
playonlinux
is in the AUR
If you have trouble … do include the error output.
There’s no error output. One program I’ve tried to run is a game that has installed successfully and indicates with the loading icon that it’s doing something but nothing happens. PlayOnLinux just opens up with Kate in some sort of text box. It appears to be opening just fine in some way but with the incorrect program. I’ll be looking through that link that you provided.
I dont understand.
So … playonlinux
was installed successfully?
pacman -Qs playonlinux
And you have separately installed some game?
How have you done these things? How are you trying to launch them?
I should have specified that playonlinux was not successfully installed. The executable install file opened with Kate as the default program and showed up as a bunch of text. I installed the game with wine and attempted to launch it by double clicking it.
So maybe we should start over …
Of course no support can or will be given to some random executable ~‘installed’.
Please remove whatever it is you have partially installed and use the link above to understand the AUR and its prerequisites and then build and install playonlinux
.
It is probably an install script that you have not marked as executable. But don’t do that. As a beginner, don’t install things manually. Stick to the packet manager.
Have you considered trying Lutris? It’s in the repo and has replaced my need for PlayOnLinux.
Another vote for Lutris as it is so quick and easy to flip switches to get the best game play experience, or to use different runners.
No way would I go PlayOnLinux with Lutris as an alternative.
Even the Proton Glorious Eggroll guy creates special versions of Proton for it.
