How to install nvidia driver for secondary GPU on laptop

I think my secondary nvidia gpu isn’t running on my laptop. I was trying to run DXVK recently and wondering why it wasn’t working and one thing led to another and eventually I came to the realization that it must have been because my nvidia gpu, the one that actually supports DXVK, isn’t running. I looked up some commands and here are their results
nvidia-smi:

All in all, it all looks like I don’t actually have a driver for it, but when I try to install it with the button “Auto Install Proprietary Driver” from the manjaro settings it says

without even mentioning my nvidia gpu. And when I try to install nvidia x server settings from pamac I get

I have both latest kernels and am running from 4.20.3. Any idea what the problem could be? And yes I did install Manjaro with nonfree drivers from the beginning and as EFI if that’s relevant.

Using Bumblebee means that the dGPU will only be active when you tell it to be.

Run the application with primusrun, e.g.:

primusrun glxgears

This usually means your system is not up to date. Please fully update your packages. Otherwise, it’s because you’re trying to remove packages you shouldn’t.

Ok that command brings out a bunch of gears. I don’t know how long they last, but I stopped them after about a minute and a half and the average FPS was 60, but I’m fairly sure the system is updated - pamac doesn’t show any updates and pacman -Syu says “there’s nothing to do”. Am I missing anything else to update?

doing sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300 only checks for my integrated intel graphics like before. I also checked the manjaro wiki and noticed there’s already some nvidia settings installed, but that application can’t run because it says “nvidia driver is not loaded”

glxgears is an utility to test graphics rendering, i.e. if it runs the graphics on your system are configured correctly.

Prepending primusrun to it (or any other command) instructs a system, which uses bumblebee for switchable gpus, to render the contents of that application not with the default integrated Intel graphics, but with the dedicated Nvidia gpu.

So, since primusrun glxgears works, your system is correctly configured and you can use the Nvidia gpu to display an application by using primusrun <application name>.

But what about all the commands that say they couldn’t locate a driver? Prepending primusrun to even inxi or nvidia-smi still shows no drivers

Oh yes that seems to run when I do it with sudo, but what’s the difference between primusrun and optirun?

no idea, just observed that optirun works with those tools also, while primusrun doesn’t.


Says it’s Vulkan-based. I think bumblebee has problems with Vulkan stuff.

you may want to verify this but IIRC, bumblebee does not work with DXVK.
you have other options like nvidia PRIME or optimus-manager.

read into each and decide which is better suited to your needs. prime has both cards on at all times so no special commands (opti/primusrun). optimus-manager offers switching between intel or nvidia on a per session basis so you would have to log out and back in to make the switch, this method has power savings when not using the nvidia gpu. it all depends on which is more important to you, battery or performance?

I’d say the battery. I’m not running Linux full time, I was just trying to run this as a proof of concept to see if I could get DXVK running and try to determine how far gaming on Linux has gotten so far. But seeing that I have to go through all this, I think I could say that there is still more left before a universal approach can be accomplished.

that prime tutorial takes no more than 5 minutes to implement and works perfectly. if you really want to compare windows/linux gaming that would be the way to go, it works all the time without any special steps involved and i really dont even see much of a battery life difference when compared to bumblebee, maybe 20 minutes if even that. newer gpu’s are more efficient and stay in low power until demand requires a higher performance level and its set to work that way by default, you can also set/change its power state from the nvidia settings.

comparing performance to windows with bumblebee is an unfair advantage to windows seeing as how vulkan (dxvk) is more and more popular yet cant be used with bumblebee.

i use the prime setup for my optimus lappy and it works perfectly 100% of the time, the only downside is that it needs to be manually setup, and like i said is only a 5-10 minute inconvenience.

linux gaming is not a linux problem, it’s an nvidia one.

couple common mistakes people make are not noticing the drop-downs.

this is a drop down menu!

and on step 5, only follow the directions that match the desktop manager your using.

@petsam or @anyone, if your available i could really use your wizardry skills. i helped @kik4444 get nvidia prime setup via private message, it’s installed and setup but for some reason if he boots normally he ends up with a black screen, he then has to get to a tty and login, and startx manually and he’s on the desktop.
why would x fail to start at boot but start if run manually? i dont know how to get a log that would show that and you are pretty damn good with that stuff, your help would be appreciated if your not busy.

And I’m very grateful for that, unfortunately though I need to go to sleep in a bit and won’t be back for another 12 hours at the earliest.
After switching to Optimus, there are a few interesting things I noticed:

  • About 870MB of ram are being used at startup whereas before it was around 550MB
  • The scale or font or whatever changed on their own, now everything is a bit smaller than before
  • Occasionally the process sddm-greeter will start taking up 100% of only one core of my CPU while the rest are at 0-1%.

Please fill in the blanks… :slight_smile:
After a normal boot, if you get in black screen, move your mouse cursor and start typing your user password in blind and hit Enter to login.
If it doesn’t get you in kde session, then use another TTY and login with startx.

Then:

  • Confirm your system is up-to-date
sudo pacman -Syyu
  • Check entropy
cat /proc/sys/kernel/random/entropy_avail

If the output is <1000, install and enable haveged

sudo pacman -S haveged
sudo systemctl enable haveged
  • Confirm (post) your sddm startup Xsetup script
cat  /usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsetup
  • Check/post installed nvidia related packages
pacman -Qs nvidia
  • Confirm/post grub settings

  • Check/post sddm logs

You have enough RAM. 1.42 GiB was used “before”. Anyways, RAM is there to be used, so you have to actually see some problem with laggy behavior, before we start assuming there is a problem.

In Plasma System Settings -> Fonts, set a custom value for DPI. After you see what is the best setting, you may add it to SDDM and/or Xorg configuration to make it default.

On a side note, after switching to the optimus drivers, both my terminals (yakuake and konsole) have graphical errors or something where if I start writing something, a small line will appear below the current line in the terminal which is transparent and shows the Desktop behind it. For some reason however it doesn’t appear on screenshots…

This last problem above actually does not happen if I set the screen scale to 1 and force DPI to 96, but at those settings the splash screen is kinda broken as you can see here
