How to edit a system desktop wallpaper image?

I am using a system wallpaper, but I’d like to edit the image to make it just a shade or two lighter.

Can someone advise where I can find them, and how to edit them? afaik, they are in root and I have no access to that as a default.

Presumably, you indeed can’t edit it (without superuser privileges), but you should still be able to copy it. Then you can paste it somewhere in your user directory, and edit it as you see fit.
As for the location, selecting the Other… folder option should show where the current folder is.

Is where it is in my machine hope that helps
As for editing them you can use gimp

Yes I usually do that on forums where this is available. In this case I simply forgot, as after posting the thanks, I went a tried the solution and got distracted before coming back to check the solution tag
