Need help getting a Ryzen 7 system with a Geforce 1650 to run with the proprietary drivers

Hello, I need help getting a Ryzen 7 system with a Geforce 1650 to run with the proprietary drivers

My Desktop PC has these relevant specs:
Manjaro iso: manjaro-kde-22.1.3-230529-linux61, fully updated
PSU : Nox 500W
Motherboard: Asus Prime II B450 (latest bios - no Overclocking)
Cpu: AMD Ryzen 7 5700G with Integrated Radeon Graphics
Ram: 32GB (4 x 8GB) Crucial DDR4 2666Mhz
Graphics card: Asus Geforce GTX1650 4GB Dual
The card is connected to the lcd via DVI connetor (lcd does not have hdmi)
System runs cool, thermal readings Ok

This system was rock-stable using the iGPU Radeon integrated graphics, but since I installed the GTX1650 all hell broke loose and I cant seem to get the graphics to run properly with the proprietary drivers.
I installed a new Asus geforce GTX1650 expecting improve game performance and Blender 3D rendering and use CUDA to speed up some AI programming python tasks. I know this is a Low-Budget option, but its what I could afford.

The card shows correctly detected in the boot after being plugged in the PCI slot, and the proprietary drivers were installed from the official repository, but:

  • Can’t start Wayland session (it goes back to login screen), so only X session can be started.
  • After suspension, about 50% of times the system either dose not resume from suspension (black screen) or resume with blurry screen requiring reboot.
  • Blender (installed from official repository) crashes with a screen full of coloured square pattern - sound stays on, mouse and keyboard are irresponsive
  • Linux games installed via flatpak such as Dynablaster or Flightgear crash after a few seconds (coloured squares screen shows up as above)
  • Windows 3D apps running in Wine such as Daz3d also crash often while rendering with exact same simpthoms as above (In this case I see RAM being taken as if there is a leak)
  • Otherwise the system shows graphics correctly

What I have tried by searching the web and this forum:

  • Fresh install Manjaro from iso and choosing proprietary drivers: No changes
  • disable amd occache option in bios: No changes
  • installed previous proprietary drivers version from repositories: No changes
  • Apply open-source nouveau driver and unnistall proprietary driver in the hardware config gui: It works and does not crash, but performance obviously does not meet the cards full potential

Could someone provide me some guidance/clues on how to diagnose or solve this issue so I can make full use of this card potential using the proprietary drivers?

Sorry about the long post
Regards

Hi @pedrovalv000, and welcome!

In order for us, or anyone for that matter, to be able to provide assistance, more information is necessary. To that end, please see:

Please also note and heed: Forum Rules - Manjaro

Hope you manage!

:bangbang: Tip: :bangbang:

To provide terminal output, copy the text you wish to share, and paste it here, surrounded by three (3) backticks, a.k.a grave accents. Like this:

```
pasted text
```

Or three (3) tilde signs, like this:

~~~
pasted text
~~~

This will just cause it to be rendered like this:

Portaest sed
elementum
cursus nisl nisi
hendrerit ac quis
sit
adipiscing
tortor sit leo commodo.

Instead of like this:

Portaest sed elementum cursus nisl nisi hendrerit ac quis sit adipiscing tortor sit leo commodo.

Alternatively, paste the text you wish to format as terminal output, select all pasted text, and click the </> button on the taskbar. This will indent the whole pasted section with one TAB, causing it to render the same way as described above.

Thereby improving legibility and making it much easier for those trying to be of assistance.

:bangbang::bangbang: Additionally

If your language isn’t English, please prepend any and all terminal commands with LC_ALL=C. For example:

LC_ALL=C bluetoothctl

This will just cause the terminal output to be in English, making it easier to understand and debug.

Please edit your post accordingly.

And … please tell us if PRIME is working.
Maybe this is a case similar to the following thread:

Thank you cscs for your anwser, output bellow:

cscs, I did not install Prime. I saw it mentioned in this forum, but in the context of laptop computers with intel integrated graphics.

Ah, so it is not a dual-gpu setup.

Then PRIME does not matter and does not need to be installed.

…or is it ?

You could show us system info:

According to this you only have the one GPU.
But this could be a consequence of installing the nvidia drivers.

Please remove and run again

sudo mhwd -r pci video-nvidia

output after removing video-nvidia:

I think you need to restart (it still shows using the nvidia driver).

i am back, after restart, output bellow:

I still only see the nvidia card.
… is the amd disabled somehow, such as in BIOS?

Usually an iGPU + dGPU both should be recognized and the iGPU should be used by default … the dGPU called by PRIME. But … your system seems to only recognize the dGPU.

Some folks pull out their hair trying to get it this way … but yours is somehow just like that inexplicably.

in the bios if i remember well I only have a listbox with iGpu and iPci options. When I plugged the card for the first time and rebooted it changed to iPci by itself. The monitor is connected to the geforce dvi output instead of the motherboard dvi. I did not made any manual changes to the bios settings.

OK. Well, in that case I suppose the output makes sense.
We can put the nvidia drivers back:

sudo mhwd -i pci video-nvidia

I wonder if maybe it would be helpful to remove the open profile (should be unneeded now):

sudo mhwd -r pci video-linux

You may also try a newer kernel, ex:

sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux64

I will try that. I will get back to you after reboot and testing, Changing to 6.4 kernel would not be my first option since I saw other people having issues with it and geforce drivers… , but since I have already did a backup and fresh install before, I have nothing to loose.

You can have multiple kernels installed and select them from grub at boot.
I’m just thinking it might be a good idea to try the newer ones with newish hardware.

I am back . No luck, the behavior is the same , check screenshot of the dynablaster game crash ( just like before the driver and kernel change). It took 20 sec to crash. I had to reboot again to log into the forum.

i took a photo of the screen, because obviously i had irresponsive keyboard. cscs thank you for you time and effort anyway.

I have just tried another KDE arch linux distribution ( the terminal-centric one) with same kernel version (6.1) and same nvidia proprietary drivers (version ) and the card works fine after a fresh OS install and does not crash. So I guess that rules out any hardware issue.
Could someone give me some clues about what I could look for to make it work in Manjaro ?

Please dont get me wrong , I am not trying to criticize anyone , I just want to make it work for me and anyone else with this issue because Manjaro is my favorite distro and its in main machines both at work and home.

Update: In my last previous I mentioned the problem was not present using another arch distro, but after some more testing i found that the computers still freezes in other arch linux with same kernel and driver version, but it takes longer: like a couple of minutes instead than just a few seconds.

I will do a few more tests, but the PSU is now my main suspect. Its a basic 500W Nox branded psu that was sold together with the case. I also have a lot of other periphals drawing power from USB, likely the 1650 under load is taking the PSU to the limit and voltage drops causing the crashes.
