Help with HP Envy x360 15-ds000CTO Ryzen 7 3700U

I seem to be one of several people who recently picked up this HP Envy system with a Ryzen 7 3700U. In this thread, I outlined how I got the machine working by cobbling together various hints from others around the Internet.

I'm left in a state where the keyboard and touchpad don't work (I don't think power management does either), and I'm hoping somebody can help me. Here are my hardware details:

exactly what is currently changed? and are you certain you needed to change all that you did change?

Regarding the kernel version, the Realtek wireless that comes with this laptop works with kernel 5.1; it doesn't seem to work with 5.2 or 5.3. So since I have three (actually four, I think: power management doesn't seem to recognize the battery, but I only noticed that on kernel 5.1) things that don't work, I figured I'd reduce them to two by using kernel 5.1. But if I can get the keyboard/touchpad/battery working, I do have an old USB wireless adapter that works.

So the whole story is I got this laptop, tried to install Manjaro, and ran into problems (lockups). Googling revealed this Ask Ubuntu, which revealed this kernel.org thread, which revealed this blog post.

When I discovered that I could supply acpi=off nospec_store_bypass_disable to both the Arch ISO and the Manjaro ISO in this thread, I realized I could install Manjaro on the machine using a USB keyboard and mouse, and then attempt the ACPI table thing from the instructions above.

So I did that: on Windows, I extracted the ACPI tables, made the recommended changes, and compiled them back. I then saved the files to a USB stick. I then installed Manjaro (I considered Arch because I figured it likely had a newer kernel, but their ISO doesn't apparently allow you to boot the kernel in UEFI mode and still provide custom parameters to it---plus I actually use Manjaro), creating a new partition table and completely blowing away Windows. I then booted the machine using acpi=off nospec_store_bypass_disable and created the custom initrd with the ACPI tables concatenated as described in the Ask Ubuntu, kernel.org thread, and blog post above.

Using that, the machine boots without parameters, but with no touchpad, keyboard, wireless, and possibly battery (at least on kernel 5.1). So that's where I am currently; in the other thread I was trying various kernel boot parameters I also found in various threads around the Internet which some people had reported success with on other machines, but they don't seem to be working with mine. I'll try the ones @cscs mentioned above with the RC kernel 5.3 that Manjaro provides and get back to you.

thats a bit over my head tbh, i just tried the whole acpi tables thing and couldnt understand what the syntax errors even were, when i checked they looks fine. im curious to know though, if a kernel parameter is specified, does it take priority over whats in the initrd? i would assume it would but it's only assuming.

is acpi=off the only option you tried. the nospec bypass shouldnt have any effect on the keyboard/touchpad so that can be left alone as you have it. here is the acpi parameter definitions from kernel.org's kernel paramter documentation

theres also noacpi you can try instead of disabling acpi entirely with acpi=off

also, didnt i see you mention in one of your previous posts about the acpi tables, and that there were more of them than needed and you removed some of them? if so, maybe they were not so unneeded after all. have you tried repeating the process without removing them?

Okay, I installed kernel 5.3 RC4, which is the latest offered by Manjaro. Using @cscs's parameters above makes no difference; the system locks up with them or without them. noacpi does the same thing.

Yesterday, I was able to get the machine to boot by adding the extracted ACPI table to the initrd; I'll do that to the 5.3 kernel next. I know at least that I'll be back to where I was: no keyboard, no touchpad, no wireless, and I'll have to check to see if power management is working.

Kernel 5.3 RC4 boots with the modified initrd, but now I don't have keyboard, touchpad, wireless, or power management. I'm completely at a loss; I don't see any way forward at this point. :frowning:

Those parameters (vt.handoff=1 acpi_osi=Linux) also don't seem to have an effect; the unmodified initrd still results in a lockup. I'll have to look more closely at that page. One of the things I remember in all my reading is that AMD is apparently working directly with Canonical on supporting this CPU, and that there are patches in their kernels to make things work.

theres a lot of info on that hw probe, maybe you can also probe your hardware. it gets randomized before it's posted and lets others (possibly devs?) see where something may be going wrong. you can also link it into a bug report wherever.

you got the hard part done, it boots. which for a lot of HP owners is a miracle on it's own. if you can manage to get ubuntu booted even just as a live environment and probe that as well, and if the touchpad and keyboard work you can see what firmware/drivers they are using and get device/vendor id's you should be able to add those device id's to the drivers here on manjaro so they are recognized.

if you can manage the ACPI table fix, your surely capable enough to add the device id's to the appropriate drivers. or pull the drivers right from ubuntu and compile them here?

did the touchpad and/or keyboard work on the live environment or never at all?

check in bios for a touchpad option, if it's there it's usually "basic" or "advanced" as options (something like that).

go over every section and subsection of bios settings for anything that may be related. HP bios can be tricky with a bunch of useless settings, especially the "HP advanced blah-blah-blah" options. unless they are crucial, disable them.

I have a HP envy x360 DS-00005 with a Ryzen 3700U, too.
I tried many many things to install any kind of Linux, but nothing worked.
Today I did a BIOS Update which was suggested and performed automatically by my Windows (latest version is AMI F12 now). I hoped that this would changed my issues.
I also tried this: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1162746/why-wont-my-hp-envy-x360-laptop-with-ryzen-7-3700u-boot-ubuntu-live-cd (Solution 1, which didnt work).

I always get a black screen or a screen which says that ive gotten a kernel panic.

research and persistence. Start by reading this in the previous thread and then read this thread here. That would get you caught up to the progress so far. Then you can try different things and help solve this riddle of how to make linux work on this new hardware. So far no one knows yet.

I've tried all those parameters, and there's no change. The keyboard never worked in the live environment either. It worked fine in Windows, and it works fine in Grub to set boot parameters, but not when the OS is booted.

Thanks , it was for curiosity. For me. In the r5 3550h amd I have 3 c states, the usb is not working in my Asus and the battery drains so much. I am thinking between return the laptop and buy a intel one or use windows only ..m because I am not going to use Linux with that batter drajn

i dont usually say this or ever really, but it seems these laptops are working with ubuntu so maybe for now give it a try and if it works do what i suggest in post #10 . go to linux-hardware.org and run a full hardware probe so you may refer to it later and others can help you compare whats different. having the necessary data is needed to do anything resembling progress. OR you wait until these systems are better supported

I have tried Ubuntu and manjaro. Manjaro the only problem that have vs Ubuntu is that don't boot with live CD. But this is because the kernel. Manjaro has 4.19 and Ubuntu has 5.0. Ubuntu boots and manjaro not, if you instal manjaro and after install newer kernel manjaro are going to work almost as good as Ubuntu. And other thing. Ubuntu has more power drain than manjaro with a few mW, don't make the people confuse saying distross has different hardware conoability. The real reason of manjaro don't booting up in newer hardware is to having a old kernel in its iso.. like in the actual iso that is 4.19.. (much old) 3 versiones older than modern kernel
