Help needed in identifying offending update

Hello all,

Couple of days ago i noticed that whenever i would restart, GRUB screen with options would not show and instead would boot into default option. This is only happening after a restart. On cold boot after a shutdown, GRUB screen is shown as usual.

Fortunately for me, I happen to take Timeshift snapshots before every major update I do so I thought of restoring the most recent one to see if the issue persists. Lo and behold, the issue disappeared and GRUB screen would show even after a restart.

For context reference, here the output of inxi -zv8

So, my question is two-fold:

  1. Is this behavior something that can be remedied and have GRUB screen appear after a restart?
  2. Failing the above  , how can i identify the offending update that’s causing this mess and avoid installing it altogether? Between my current state and the previous snapshot - where the issue is not reproduced - there are 680 updates! I can’t possibly go through them one-by-one in order to find which is the guilty one.

Any ideas?

Hi @londino, and welcome!

Yes. While I don’t know what might be the cause of this, I would recommend you do the update, ensure the install-grub script is installed:

pamac install install-grub

…shut down, start up again, and reinstall GRUB:

sudo install-grub

Then reboot and test.

Thanks for the welcome @Mirdarthos . Long time lurker, first time poster here.

I tried your suggestion and the issue still persists  Anything else i could try?

Well, since you asked, you could try giving us more information, such as the outputs of the commands you used. (Run 'em again, copy-and-paste here, the same format as your inxi output.)

Also, then please provide the output of:

fdisk -l

and

lsblk -o NAME,MAJ:MIN,RM,SIZE,RO,TYPE,UUID,MOUNTPOINTS

OK here they are one-by-one:

pamac install install-grub

Preparing...
cp: cannot access '/var/lib/pacman/sync/download-XUkGOV': Permission denied
Warning: install-grub-2:2.12.r260.gaae2ea619-3 is up to date -- skipping
Nothing to do.

P.S. This one had a different output first time i ran it as it did install the grub version that is now skipping, due to having already installed it previously.

sudo install-grub
