Help me remove the nvidia drivers

I’ve opened System Settings - Hardware Configuration
Clicked on Auto install open source driver
It tells me it’s already installed:

Skipping already installed config ‘video-linux’ for device: 0000:01:00.0 (0300:10de:1b81) Display controller nVidia Corporation GP104 [GeForce GTX 1070]

I have two kernels installed (5.10 and 5.4), so I removed this packages:
linux54-nvidia, linux510-nvidia, nvidia-utils

Unblacklisted the nouveau driver
Restarted my system and I got a black screen
(restored my system with timeshift to quickly continue working)

Am I doing something wrong? missing some step?
Help appreciated

try to change TTY, if it’s possible it will not be so hard to repair.

Yes, I can go to tty2 and login as my regular user, but I don’t know what to do there  :joy:

startx, if it works try to setup DM or reinstall it

Some files need to be rewritten/replaced?

If you can get to desktop withstartx command is good and we will search for DM issue.

  1. Please read this:
    How to provide good information
and post some more information so we can see what’s really going on. Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin lies…
  2. An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width would be the minimum required information for us to be able to help you. (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)
Also, please copy-paste that output in-between 3 backticks ``` at the beginning and end of the code/text.

P.S. If you enter a bit more details in your profile, we can also see which Desktop Environment you’re using, which CPU/GPU or Kernel, … you have without typing it every time

Thanks. Since there is a new system update today, I’ll first give that new nvidia driver a try
If problems arise, I’ll try using nouveau

  • If you get lost, please remember Ctrl+Alt+F1 is your friend!

  • Print this page so you have it as a reference while in TTY2

  • Log off

  • Switch to TTY2 by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2

  • Log in there

  • Execute:

    sudo mhwd --remove pci video-nvidia
    sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
  • Remove nouveau if present and save

  • Execute:

    sudo mhwd --install pci nouveau
    sudo reboot

Very clear and handy
Thanks Fabby!
