Help installing an AMD rx6600xt

Hello everyone,

I’ve scoured the internet and found plenty of answers, none of which work. I decided to switch from an nvidia gtx 1650 to a SWFT xfx radeon rx 6600xt; I run Manjaro Linux, have 32 gigabytes of properly seated ram, a ryzen 5 5600x CPU, msi b550 motherboard, and boot from CSM in BIOS.

As I turn on the PC, everything seems to work as the troubleshooting lights cycle and it begins to boot. But then, the card’s fans turn off and it gets stuck on the boot screen forever. I’ve tried purging NVIDIA drivers, changing the boot mode, reseating the card in both PCIE slots several times, reseating the RAM several times, and I even reset the BIOS. Absolutely nothing works. I can only conclude that it’s a Manjaro specific issue, but I’ve been told that AMD cards should work out of the box on pretty much any distro. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I have same CPU and GPU though other motherboard. No issues on my side.

According to your description I would suspect hardware issue.

Did you also try booting from USB?

If it’s an issue with your installation on previous hardware then I’m at a loss - but for sure, AMD cards will work on a clean install, but then you have to waste a few hours setting things up (for my, the Arr stack takes a while) and importing settings - I had to re-set the mounts (Deleted fstab and used gnome-disks to mount them again) modify some scripts for the new networking hardware too.

We usually do not encourage screenshots, etc.; however, in this case, are you able to take a clear photo of the point where the booting gets stuck? This might help to better identify the problem.

Output of the following command (formatted according to forum requirements) may be useful; please copy/paste this to the forum:

inxi --admin --verbosity=8 --filter --no-host --width

Be prepared to provide more information and outputs from other commands if/when asked.

General:

As an infrequent forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements; in particular, the many ways to use the forum to your benefit:

The Update Announcements should be checked frequently for important update related information.

These announcements contain a Known Issues and Solutions section and should generally be checked before posting a request for support.

Regards.

mhwd -li

Then remove the named driver e.g.

sudo mhwd -r pci video-nvidia

Sounds like a hardware issue - did you buy it second-hand on ebay?

Can you boot a live ISO?

How did you reach that conclusion?

You don’t specify which B550 mainboard you have (posting the requested system information would help) - however, if it is the B550-A-PRO (for example) - this board has a UEFI BIOS.

Is there any particular reason you’re booting in CSM mode? :eyes:

Have you updated the BIOS?

I notice (again, if it’s the B550-A-PRO) that the latest (non-beta) BIOS for that board is:

Title AMI BIOS
Version 7C56vAI
Release Date 2024-08-05
File Size 17.34 MB

I’m very sorry about the silence; I’ve been sleeping for a while now. Here are pictures of my setup and the order in which things happen:

Mode edit:- Images removed. They were helpful, thanks.

The PC goes to the info screen as I request in BIOS, then flashes the Manjaro loading sprite, before cutting to a black screen. Backlight is on and the monitor is getting signal; when it switches to the black screen, the graphics card stops spinning.

My BIOS is very outdated-- I’ll try flashing it to the latest update. As for removing Nvidia drivers, I can’t fully get rid of them, since they somehow require themselves.

Thank you for your patience.

Here’s the complete output of the command. I’m afraid I can only paste it while running the 1650, but using the rx6600 I did notice that it recognized the GPU and its temp/fans, which is probably a good thing!

I’d like to thank everyone, I’m sure it’s obnoxious to have people like me stumbling in the dark. Thank you for your patience and help.

Your kernel is end of life, for a while.

Use a LTS one, 6.6 and/or 6.12 should do fine. see Manjaro Kernels - Manjaro and keep an eye out for announcements en kernel eol’s

When properly updated first, try again to remove the nvidea drivers.

See: Swap - Manjaro → Do i need swap

These nvidia drivers really arent good. I cant update the kernel from CLI or GUI on either card, because swapping kernels would break nvidia drivers. Is there any way I can just forcibly remove the nvidia drivers? When I try to uninstall them they end up requiring themselves so I can’t uninstall them.

Have you updated you whole system. What does pamac upgrade of sudo pacman -Syu output.

Edit: Thank you so much.

I managed to remove the dependency for Nvidia and now my new card works! My system is free of the green plague! Thank you so much.

Glad to hear it.

Now all that remains is for you to mark the post that you feel helped you the most as the solution to this thread.

As @Hanzel mentions, a change of kernel is needed – 6.6 (LTS) seems a fair suggestion:

And swap space is always a welcome addition.

I’ll just add to avoid leaving too much time between updates; and that reinstalling your OS to boot as UEFI is a viable option if you ever find yourself in a tinkering mood – your mainboard is fully UEFI capable; it seems a shame to waste the potential.

I have removed the screenshots that are no longer needed.
Enjoy Manjaro.

Regards.
