HDMI 4K issue, occasional blank/black screen

First, is this a good place to post this issue? Or, if it’s looking like driver investigation is needed, should I post to kernel dot org?

I won’t drop all the hardware specs jet, but can do.

I’m using a newish laptop with Intel Iris Plus Graphics G7.

I have 2 problems, I’ll mention the second one for interest, I don’t know if it’s going to be related.

issue 1

Using the laptop, lid closed with an external monitor, HDMI, 3840x2160 at 60Hz.

The display (HDMI output) is mostly working fine.

But, for about the first 15 mins of uptime, the screen (signal I assume) will drop to blank/black, for a second or two, come back for a bit, and repeat.

No pattern, just short drop-outs.

It seams to settle after a few minutes, but I can’t be 100% sure, I’ve only had this monitor for a couple of days. NB. This also happened on another 4K monitor I tried, again, just for a couple of days.

If anyone would like to look into it, just let me know and we can share tech. stuff.

Thanks.

ps. issue 2

Using gimp, taking a screen shot will not grab the ‘current’ screen.

That is, when using the laptop screen.

It will grab a desktop background, but some old one (maybe the boot background) and with no windows.

I just tried it on the external HDMI screen, and it worked fine.

When the signal goes away, please run journalctl -b0 and check if you can see any messages around the time the issue occurred.

Thanks @pobrn - here it is as my ‘user’ account, let me know if you want it run as root?

$ uptime
 15:32:15 up 1:28, 1 user, load average: 1.10, 0.52, 0.67

So boot time was about 14:04:

$ journalctl -b0

It seems you need to run it as root. By the way, if you remember when this happened, then you can run journalctl and find the date and time.

It just did it while I was reading your reply, at about 15:50:

Do you see anything to look into?

I just did a cold login, it blanked for a second, ran ’ journalctl -b0’ - nothing.

Not a line.

Other FYI: have run this laptop with a 1440 HDMI screen, no problems at all.

It’s just at 4K, it will blank a bit.

I cannot see anything relevant in the log regarding the first issue. Have you eliminated most hardware issues? (faulty cable, connector, etc.) Please post the output of inxi -Gazy.

re: other hardware issues

This is the second monitor it’s happened on, so I doubt it’s the monitor.

I can try swapping the HDMI cable - that was a problem on another machine/setup, but it was a problem with ‘red dots’ over the picture, so the cable can be a problem.

Have you tried the modesetting Xorg driver?

I played a video for about 3 hours last night, with a higher quality HDMI cable, and I didn’t see any glitches at all.

So I think that’s a ‘solved’ - it was the HDMI cable.

Additional thoughts for anyone finding this thread:

My ‘bad’ HDMI cable was rated at 4K.

I would not have expected this kind of failure/problem, being due to a bad cable.

I would have expected:

not working at all
artifacts in the picture

but random blanking did surprise me.

So there you have it, the quality of an HDMI cable can have more effect on the picture than you think.

Thanks @pobrn for the suggestion - I did know to try changing all the parts in a system, but as I’ve said, I had not thought the cable could create this kind of problem.
