Have there been some changes to fprintd lately that kind of messed it all up?

I managed to set up fprint a couple of months ago after finally having found a working device (digitalPersona U.are.U 4500). I changed many pam files to use fingerprint authentication, so it worked for example when logging in, on the lock screen, for sudo etc.

But for the last 3 weeks or so, it must have changed somehow as I did not change anything. The first thing I noticed already a little before is that I could not use fingerprint authentication in Pamac any more. I have to type the password everytime now. That’s the case for any GUI application that tries to get elevated permissions.

But in the last three weeks, it got messy. If I wish to log back in on a lock screen, I now have to click on another “unlock” button which shows up as the only thing on the screen after successfully authenticating. But it’s not always like this. Seems random and annoying.

Also on the lock screen, if I fail to authenticate, I am unable to type the password instead. This was possible before. Typing the password has no effect. It will even let me keep authenticating by fingerprint even though it for example says “Too many failed attempts, locked for 6/8 minutes”. Seems very off and not intentional.

What caused this? How can I get the old behavior back?
