Manjaro freezes when running backintime (rsync)

I encounter freezes for a system which was running pretty stable beforehand. It appears that a freeze occurs more often, when I conduct backups on an external HDD. I tried to track this down, to no avail.

Can someone please provide some hints about how to proceed from hereon?

How long is it since you checked your dives for consistency (fsck)?

I just did and they are all reported to be ok.

Moreover, system seems stable without touching rsync. This is really mad. Any other idea?

First, what does system freeze mean exactly? Locks up for good? Locks up for a time and then is usable again?

You need to look at logs from when it freezes. If it froze hard and you had to restart then journalctl -b -1 --no-pager is the log from previous boot, look at the end of it. If you didn’t reboot then journalctl -S -10m --no-pager shows the last 10 minutes (adjust number of minutes as needed).

I’ve checked the journal, but there is a lot of information. I guess, I am looking for red entries, just before death. Is this correct? But there is nothing red.

I’d like to share here - is there some command removing the sensitive information?

Is your backup location formatted as NTFS?

The source drives are mixed, i.e. some ext4 and some ntfs (all encrypted). Target drive is luks/ext4.

OK. As some are NTFS, a failure with the ntfs3 kernel module might be complicating things. A few people are experiencing that of late. Try this:

sudo pacman -S ntfs-3g
echo 'blacklist ntfs3' | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/disable-ntfs3.conf

… and try running the backup again.

Further to this, you might also consider checking your disks for consistency, if you havent already (fsck). For the NTFS filesystems, chkdsk is best suited, from within a Windows environment.

Ok, this seems to help: Ran the complete backup twice on empty target drives, both time successfully.

(One remark: I assume a restart is required in order to blacklist the ntfs3 package.)

With procedure above, we’ve restored the previous ntfs-driver, which was upgraded with my kernel upgrade to 6.1.xx. What should I do from hereon? Do you need additional tests from my end?

If blacklisting the kernel ntfs3 driver (and restarting) has solved your problem then you’re done. Future updates won’t re-enable it.
