GUI login hangs

After booting, I am presented with the GUI login. After specifying credentials, a black screen with the Breeze Dark logo (3 dots and a “>”) is shown with a spinning circle. After about 20 seconds, the circle stops rotating (frozen).

My workaround is to switch to a different terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F2), login via command line, and then run startx. The normal desktop quickly shows without issue.

Things were working fine until about a month ago after an update. I was hoping things would rectify themselves with a further update, but apparently not. Any ideas why the graphical route fails?

EDIT1: There is no issue if I create a new user and login to that account.

Here is the output of System Information. For reasons unknown to me, I can’t post the output of inxi due to links not being allowed.
