GRUB issue (grub_rescue)

DISCLAIMER I am transitioning from Windows to Linux, I have little experience with this.

HISTORY
After manjaro failed, windows started booting without entering GRUB.
Now, GRUB prevents my Linux system from working.

DESCRIPTION
When trying to install Manjaro 18 on my system, GRUB entered rescue mode. I searched the web for solutions, but none of them worked. (I used Rufus to burn the .isos)
I couldn’t find any relevant information by using “set” command on the grub_rescue> menu. Every ls, insmod, normal, etc, command returned no useful information (Filesystem not known or similar).
Manjaro 17 installs normally, but prevents me from updating its own repositories and, consequently, GRUB.
I tried SuperGrubDisk2, Rescatux and lastly the boot-repair program (this last one through Ubuntu Live).
The SuperGrubDisk2 found every OS and succeeded in running GRUB (yes, it’s pure magic), but was not able to restore it.
Rescatux did basically the same thing, but using a graphic interface.
The boot-repair program made this log:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/PfChb4x78k/

=================== Final advice in case of suggested repair
Please do not forget to make your BIOS boot on sda1/efi/.../grub*.efi file!

If your computer reboots directly into Windows, try to change the boot order in your BIOS.
If your BIOS does not allow to change the boot order, change the default boot entry of the Windows bootloader.
For example you can boot into Windows, then type the following command in an admin command prompt:
bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\...\grub*.efi

=================== User settings
The settings chosen by the user will not act on the boot.

My suspicion involves:

  1. Manjaro 17 and 18 share some compatibility issues that prevent me from (i) updating repos (ii) upgrading from 17 to 18 (iii) updating GRUB
  2. My GRUB installation is somewhat corrupted or does not exist. I do not know how to overcome this.
Thus, it seems that the problem is circular.

Again, I am just a beginner and many terms may be wrong, but if necessary I can provide further clarification.

with usb install , can you return

inxi -Fxxxz
fdisk -l

Can it boot Manjaro?

yes, it can.

Then provide at manjaro terminal (print)
efibootmgr -v
sudo parted -l
sudo blkid
findmnt -s

If error, print error message and continue to next command.

you should verify all option in bios , you have not boot in EFI for Manjaro , but in Bios

UEFI [Legacy]: LENOVO
 date: 08/26/2016

Disk /dev/sda: 931,5 GiBbytes Disklabel type: gpt
Disk /dev/sdb: 15,1 GiB Disklabel type: dos ( USB stick )

how did you created the USB img ?
you should have 2 partitions , 2nd partition is for boot EFI iso manjaro

do not mix GPT and DOS disks

Thanks, stephane!
USB image was created using Rufus for windows.
This usb stick is running SGD2, which in turn identifies the OSs in the system and allows me to acces my “old” manjaro installation.
The sda (913GB) is my internal HD.
The sdb (15GB) is the USB sitck.
The system runs UEFI on legacy mode which, as I understand, would make it compatible with BIOS-derived software and OS.
How can I, then, boot in EFI for Manjaro?

UPDATE
As stephane pointed out, changing boot order from “EFI first” to “Legacy first” worked fine, and now GRUB loads. Thanks again!
However, no windows option other than the Windows Recovery environment loads.
How can I add the Windows instance on GRUB?

I suggest you start from the beginning, when it all started! :joy:

You are very near having Manjaro working…
My concern is with your suspicions

  1. You have problem updating Manjaro, means you have booted to Manjaro installation on disk. Am I wrong?
  2. You seem to have Manjaro $esp files in place (bootloader), though it seems you have no (proper) UEFI entry for Manjaro, if I understood correctly (you have a Linpus entry…)

Your system is normaly a UEFI system with Windows and Manjaro installed in UEFI mode.
In order to have Windows entry included in Grub menu, Windows and Manjaro have to be in the same mode (now UEFI). So you need to set your BIOS to UEFI priority (or only)

I suggest you follow the below tutorial to boot and repair your bootloader.
Use the Simple method first and the additional commands for UEFI.
If you don’t succeed, post your experience.

Morning.
To repeat what petsam says (in a different way),
A bios-legacy grub cannot detect/boot a uefi windows.

Your Manjaro is now bios-legacy though you have a $esp (correctly) specified in fstab.
I suspect (but not conclusively) that SuperGrubDisk had turned (that pure magic) your system from uefi to a bios-legacy (and that’s why I ask you to print out ‘efibootmgr -v’ expecting it to have errors).

I concur with petsam you use the link to try to fix it to uefi with the following emphasis.

o You cannot boot up Manjaro the way you’re doing now or the “SuperGrub” way
as that will boot up in bios-legacy mode. You must boot in UEFI mode and for that you must use livecd and boot it up in uefi mode.

o Be sure to do the 2 [Additional UEFI commands].

sudo cp /boot/grub/x86_64-efi/core.efi /boot/efi/EFI/boot/bootx64.efi
sudo efibootmgr -c -d /dev/sda -p 1 -L "manjaro" -l "\EFI\Manjaro\grubx64.efi"

o It is possible that having done that, you may still face some problems as your system is Lenovo and may be tied up with Microsoft in monopolizing your system.
In that case, follow up with the Lenovo link in the [Difficult UEFI setups] section further down in the link.

Good luck.

Thanks gohlip and petsam for the answers!

As I understand, I need to revert the Manjaro installation to an UEFI boot.

To do that, I’ll boot Manjaro in using a liveCD, follow the instructions on this link and then add those two lines of code that gohlip suggested.

If problems arise, I’ll follow the Lenovo path.
I’ll post the follow-up to this thread as soon as possible.
Thanks.

Hello all,
Fortunately, I tried new installation and… it worked! Some friends helped along, and it’s fine.
I thank everybody for the time, it was useful to get experience with the distro.
I’ll keep posting doubts here, should they occur.
Thanks a lot!
