GRUB disappeared after attempt to recover

Hello,
I bought a new computer and installed Windows 10 (2004) and Manjaro (latest KDE iso). Instalation worked fine. After booting to Manjaro, update manager showed 550 packets that needed update. I proceeded with the update and I got no errors. After reboot GRUB showed only Windows and UEFI Firmware settings (just like in thread: Grub missing manjaro entry)

I tried to recover GRUB with the instructions from Wiki page but with no success. I think, that at first I might have mounted EFI partition like for BIOS setup, and it caused grub-install to fail. Later I went through the instructions more thorough, grub-install finished without errors, grub-update finished with ‘done’ but it didn’t have any line telling that any OS was found. Now GRUB is not loading at all. I get black screen and UEFI loads. I can still boot Windows from UEFI but not Manjaro. When I mount EFI partition there are Windows and Manjaro folders.

My setup is NVME SSD partitioned with GPT label and UEFI boot (wihout CSM).
When I get home I can post all the steps I’m trying from terminal.

and post some more information so we can see what’s really going on. Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin lies…

An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host would be the minimum required information… (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)

In your particular case the output to:

parted --list
efibootmgr --verbose

would be beneficial as well.

I don’t really know what could go wrong. At the end GRUB installed just fine, but still couldn’t find installed systems.

Can you chroot again and show us content of your /boot folder by

I think you might have to mount the efi partition before entering the command grub-install… in chroot.

I did it this way. I followed instructions on Wiki page step by step.

Strangely enough, when I go to /mnt/boot/efi/ in Dolphin it seems empty. Dolphin still shows available space correctly, but no files are shown. Maybe it’s some clue?

  1. This is strange and must be fixed first. :thinking: Have you booted the live iso in UEFI mode? Your system looks like UEFI.

  2. As all your kernels are missing, within manjaro-chroot you could try to install a kernel, e.g. 5.4 (or chose your preffered one) by

mhwd-kernel -i linux54
mkinitcpio -P
depmod -a
update-grub
exit

I’m pretty sure that I booted live iso in UEFI mode. I selected boot override from UEFI. Also CSM (BIOS-legacy boot) is turned off in UEFI settings.
I use the same pendrive trying to restore GRUB that I used to install Manjaro. And it worked fine - installed system booted with no problems.

I’ll try installing new kernel and see if it helps.

Looks like even installing new kernel won’t that easy after all…

I’m starting to wonder if full reinstall wouldn’t be easiest and fastest solution, but I’m afraid that I’ll just end up in the same place I’m in now.

I agree with @Wollie.

Please run the following command:

test -d /sys/firmware/efi && echo "EFI :)" || echo "BIOS :("

That will tell you if you’re running in BIOS or EFI mode if you’re in BIOS mode tell us how exactly you’re booting the Store’NGo (that seems to be formatted in EFI mode, so that’s good, but it has a Joliet system too)

As for the way I’ve booted Live iso, I used Boot Override and selected UEFI: Verbatim Store’NGo

Nevertheless, have you disabled CSM in your firmware? Some UEFI implementations are really strange and get a system booted in legacy mode as they believe to have detected a BIOS system.

Yes, I disabled CSM prior to installation of Windows 10 and Manjaro. I wanted to be sure as I had some problems with my old computer because of it.

EDIT: I’ve found this topic fresh-manjaro-doesnt-boot-at-all-after-package-manager-update-upgrade/22781 and it’s strangely similar to my problem. I think I’ll try my luck with reinstall and updating system with terminal.

Answer 1. It’s a bug.

You can run pacman -Syu first. Be sure to be chrooted first. After that you have to install a kernel. Your /boot has no kernels, so nothing is added to grub menu.

After that you should be able to do an update-grub but check and recheck that the right partition is mounted in /boot/efi

I reinstalled Manjaro, although reinstallation is always a last resort for me. Took me some time because Calamares hung twice installing LibreOffice, but all in all it’s a success :relieved:
I updated the freshly installed system with

sudo pacman-mirrors --fasttrack && sudo pacman -Syyu

and it did the trick. System is up and running, GRUB shows both systems and everything works.
It seems that broken update was the reason for boot failure and maybe for GRUB repairing problems.

I have very similar problem as one described in this post.
I have dual boon Win 8.1 / Manjaro system. After Clonezilla whole-drive backup, GRUB startup menu disappeared completely and the system goes direct into Windows.

I tried the instructions from the GRUB /Restore GRUB Bootloader, starting the system from USB and after several unsuccessful attempts managed to get all the way to the last step ‘sudo update-grub’ which came up with similar error as in last section of post 3 above (cannot find GRUB for dev/sdb1)

Upon restart of the system, the GRUB menu showed up, however, it only had a single option which is Windows. Now I am stuck how to get the Manjaro option as well as the other two standard menu items (memtest and advanced).

my ext4 partition is sda6 and my vfat (efi) partition is sda2
/boot/EFI directory contains /Boot; /Manjaro; /Microsoft

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!
