Yes.
You can’t really mix software from different branches because they can have different versions, so they may not be compatible.
It’s your computer, if you’re happy with software decoding then stick with it.

Yes, it’s the stock CPU heatsink. I’m not usually pushing the CPU too hard as I use it mainly for work and streaming (no gaming).
If I try the unstable branch from the link, do I need to do anything with the links at the bottom, or are they just for reference?
They’re just for reference.
Thanks dmt, you’ve been very helpful. Last question on this issue (hopefully), I presume once I go unstable, the system will determine which codecs are needed for my particular GPU automatically? In other words, if I use the direction given, I’m good to go?
You’re welcome.
Good question, they will be used when configured to do so.

You may need to configure some software separately.
If you have any issues or questions just ask.
If anyone spots something I’ve missed, etc, please chime in.
On another note, I added a swap file. Thanks to those who suggested.
Much better, indeed.
Most welcome. These links will also be useful to bookmark:
Actually, it does.
The browser has to work more aggressively, and resultantly, so does your system.
The best you can do, generally, is to reconsider whatever cooling system you have in place. Larger (quieter) fans, perhaps; even another enclosure and/or power supply can potentially help with dampening excessive fan noise.
I use a Be Quiet enclosure which (as the brand name might suggest), is a remarkably quieter case than many offerings in the marketplace. System resources could also be increased (more RAM, faster disks).
Of course, for those using laptops, these choices are severely limited. Providing as much ventilation as possible is often the only recourse.
Cheers.
I’ll play devil’s advocate here; in that mesa
and the change to Unstable is probably unwarranted for a user with the OP’s current understanding of Linux.
That’s the only quarm. Otherwise, the information given is sound enough.
