Gnome not providing a login prompt

After booting, I am presented with the usual login screen however, there is no login prompt. I can move the mouse, check the calendar and use the GUI to shutdown again.
Using ctr+alt + f-keys makes the screen freeze until I come back to F1.

I had the same problem yesterday, figured it might have been a bad update after some time or just something I broke and reinstalled. Worked as it should yesterday, same problem this morning. Any ideas?

Hi @m0hawk,

All I can think of is shutting thee system down with REISUO, rebooting and hoping it works.

See here: [HowTo] reboot / turn off your frozen computer: REISUB/REISUO.

Alternatively, you can boot with a Live ISO, enter a chroot environment, and check the logs for any errors:

journalctl --boot=-1 --priority=3

(Or that’s how I have it anyway.)

Thanks @Mirdarthos
I got a bunch of usb read errors in the log and after some testing it seems like my front usb is broken. If there is anything plugged in there, I get no login prompt.
