Hi, it seems to be that Gnome log doesn’t work on Manjaro Linux 25.03? Is that a known bug?
Works for me - I never used that app, but I’m looking at it (working) right now.
Of course mine is not a fresh installation, but a fully updated Manjaro Gnome, installed April last year.
I just just found an older thread ( GNOME 48.1 - gnome-logs keeps crashing with Dash-to-dock extension enabled ) and it seems to be related to the Dash to Dock extension. Without the extension, it works normally or only through the console.
Extensions are a fun way to frequently create quite intractable problems in Gnome
Especially with an ever changing system like Arch/Manjaro.
I had to watch a video to get a visual demonstration of what a dash and what a dock is - and I still don’t get the difference.
Just hit “Super” (the Windows key) and the thing appears.
What is the difference?
As I’ve said in the other thread, I reported the ‘bug’ as an ‘issue’ in the Dash-to-dock github.com instance. One of the developers concluded though, that the extension would only be a trigger for the bug but never the root cause. He asked me to report it over at gnome-logs, which I did recently.
I provided a backtrace (once I found out how to do one) and unfortunately haven’t heard any news yet.
How did you install the extension?
Using pacman
or pamac
and thus the version in the Manjaro repository?
Or did you install it via the gnome extensions web site?
I’m not sure whether the extensions installed via the latter method will be automatically kept up to date - I’d guess that to be unlikely.
It could then be just too old and incompatible and the cause for your trouble …
You can tell which method you used by going to the settings for the extension and see whether you get the option to remove it.
If you don’t get that option, you have the repo version installed.
That one can’t be removed from that users settings dialogues - it is installed system wide.
If you do get that option - you should probably update it or remove it and reinstall the current version.
The gnome log viewer definitely works for me, whether I have the extension installed and enabled or whether I do not.
Right now I have the one from the repos installed - which will be updated along with everything else.
No issue with this one.
And if I install it (right now) from the gnome extension web site, I’ll very likely get the correct version to work with the current gnome shell version.
… which might be different than what you have installed some time ago …
oh - should I have addressed this at @sebbie1009
I’m unsure - now you are both tagged
I for one have installed the repo version (version 100.1) that comes with the Manjaro installation and gets updated regularly.
pacman -Ss gnome-shell-extension-dash-to-dock
extra/gnome-shell-extension-dash-to-dock 100-1 [installed]
A dock for the GNOME Shell
For testing I setup a fresh install for Manjaro 25.0.3 in a VM using the Unstable branch and even then gnome-logs keeps crashing as long as the dash-to-dock extension is enabled.
Well, that is one factoid.
Another is:
I’m on stable and cannot replicate - no problem whatsoever.
These two, kind of opposing things, can be seen either way - or something else is at play.
With the Dash to Dock extension, there are some useful customizations for the dock. It might be considered a bit of a gimmick. It was already installed by default with the Manjaro installation.
Other extensions, such as Alphabetical App Grid for alphabetically sorting the apps and Weather O’Clock for displaying the temperature next to the clock, I downloaded directly from the website gnome extensions…
Thank for contacting one of the developers. Interesting that he extension would only be a trigger for the bug but never the root cause.
That’s at least what he’s saying. Since I don’t know any details about GNOME’s inner workings, I have to believe what is stated.
I’m happy to comply and so I forwarded it to gnome-logs
You’re not the first to report that it’s working on your end. There have been confirmed cases about gnome-logs crashing as well as a user reporting everything works fine despite of also running GNOME and dash-to-dock in my linked discussion above.
So you’re right and I’m also not ruling out that there’s ‘something else’ at play.
All I know and can say is, it’s coredumping on my end even on a fresh install and I don’t seem to be the only one affected. I think all I can do has been done. I’ve reported the error and even provided a backtrace (once I found out how )
