Gnome desktop hangs after opening any program

Hi,
After the update to newer kernel versions 5.7 or 5.8 gnome crashes after opening any program. Thus, as soon as I click on any application, may it be from the panel or applications menu, a window open animation appears, but the window never appears, instead the mouse hangs and I can not interact with gnome anymore. Also the open terminal shortcut doesn’t work.

What I already tried:

  • Change Theme -> no success
  • Disable all extensions -> no success
  • Move back to kernel 5.4 -> all good,

might be related to https ://forum.manjaro.org/t/gnome-hangs-after-opening-certain-programs/16836 only that I have no NVIDIA card

from that post it might seem helpful to have the following info:

Please any advice?

Hello,

Well, 5.7 kernel reached the EOL state, and with 5.8 kernel i noticed some inconsistencies too, regardless the DE, so for now i use 5.4 kernel too.

thanks for your answer.

I thought since it is in two kernel versions, that might be something bigger and I want to dig into the problem. Since it is also something that renders the whole system unusable.

Is there any log that I could inspect further?

For me the issue starts when i want to use a VBox machine. Also i noticed that Browsers tend to lock the entire UI … so, it could be an issue of Kernel+Nvidia+Virtual Box host modules.
journalctl -b
Should show you what happened in your current boot.
journalctl --help
will show you more options to find what you are looking for.

Checkout console commands: coredumpctl and journalctl

coredumpctl shows nothing unusual

I also installed xfce desktop in parallel and kernel 5.8 works better on xfce and almost all programs start. The only program I’ve found not working is kodi (media player)…similar behavior as in gnome.

I have not installed virtualbox or any nvidia driver btw.

Why would you install nvidia drivers? your system has no Nvidia GPU.
But now i have more different questions related to this:

So, you are using the same user for both Gnome and XFCE sessions? What is the default DM now. LightDM or GDM, or are both enabled?

yes, why would I install nvidia drivers…I just mentioned this to help maybe identifying the problematic program.

xfce was previously not installed I just now installed it for testing if problems also occur in a different DE. still using GDM
