Gimp slows, sometimes crashes, using soft select tool, which may be caused by GPU

Having problem with Gimp (soft select tool slows, sometimes crashes Gimp) and I suspect the problem is GPU. I have AMD Radeon RX 580 and want to update the driver but AMD does not have one for Manjaro OS. AMD has only RHEL, Ubuntu and SLED SLES Linux drivers. Will one of these three driver updates work in Manjaro?

I ran

sudo mhwd -a pci free 0300

and got

Skipping already installed config ā€˜video-linuxā€™ for device: 0000:01:00.0 (0300:1002:67df) Display controller ATI Technologies Inc Ellesmere [Ra
deon RX 470/480/570/570X/580/580X/590]

Does this mean I already have the latest driver?

Why do you think that?

Updating an AMD driver means updating the entire kernel, since the driver is part of the linux kernel. OpenGL, Vulkan, OpenCL and HW video de/encoding is implemented with Mesa3D, i.e. 3D acceleration. So what AMD offers on its site are most likely the ā€œpro driversā€, which provide additional instruction sets on top of Mesa3D for OpenCL/Cuda, i.e. Rocm, which you donā€™t need for normal use. So it is rather additional API.

At least I can say that the problem is most likely not the GPU, since GIMP doesnā€™t support GPU acceleration like Photoshop.

Yes. The user space driver is up to date. The kernel space driver is integrated into the kernel and is updated with the kernel version.

Megavolt, I added the information about running mhwd while your answer was on the way. Thank you.

Good information. I appreciate it.

Iā€™ve ordered another 64 gigs memory to double what I have just in case that solves the problem (I donā€™t think it will).

Note that this Kernel is EOL, you should add one of the LTS ones (linux66 or linux612, currently) and remove linux611, otherwise you will experience such issues with updates.

Maybe try linux613 and see if that works better for you.

Yes ā€¦ unless you want to change branches and/or kernels thereby getting slightly newer kernels/modules to the extent they would be any different (I have not checked that they would be).

My search-fu says you have BIOS updates available, including some listed for ā€˜stabilityā€™.

Thanks, Iā€™ll update the bios.

XY Problem detected: Youā€™re asking about your attempted solution rather than your actual problem. This leads to enormous amounts of wasted time and energy, both on the part of people asking for help, and on the part of those providing help.

Please see:

Please edit your topic title appropriately.

I tried the kernels and may have had a slight improvement with linux613 but it introduced problems with my second (older) display ā€“ running linux66 now and tried but failed to remove linux611 because ā€œremoving linux611 breaks dependency 'linux611' required by linux-meta.ā€ Any suggestions?

The obvious thing - remove the *meta package(s).

( They were acquired due to the system retaining a defunct kernel - linux-meta and any related packages would have been automatically installed in an attempt to remedy that. )

Using sudo mhwd -a pci free 0300 will activate the default video-linux kernel module (driver). I too have an RX 580 which performs exceptionally well (at least, for me) using video-linux.

There is generally no requirement to use amdgpu, though it is possible; I have an ASUS Z490-A; albeit a slightly older generation board, there have been no issues such as described.

The additional RAM will no doubt be helpful, but I would be remiss if I didnā€™t note that your BIOS is rather old ā€“ perhaps not in years, but in iterations.

If the following link reflects your mainboard, there have been twelve (12) BIOS releases since version 2305 that you currently use.

The latest (available from the ASUS site) appears to be version 4101 released on 2025/01/14.

Updating the BIOS is often overlooked, whereas it can potentially solve many apparent problems.

It might be interesting to browse through the descriptions of each BIOS to see respective security updates and improvements that youā€™ve missed.

Regards.

Thank you. I didnā€™t realize I was so far behind on the BIOS.

With so many iterations in such a relatively short time, Iā€™m guessing the BIOS in question had a lionā€™s share of issues; typically, we see fewer updates over the lifetime of any given firmware.

Cheers.

Updated BIOS to latest (4101), still no joy on the Gimp problem, but of course it was important to do ā€“ much obliged to you for catching that.

Now Iā€™m waiting for the memory to get here to see if that solves my Gimp problem. Iā€™ll report when I get it in.

UPDATE 20250125:
Doubling system memory (64 to 128 gig) did not help. Still sluggish and creaky whenever I make a selection in a photo. Experimenting with swappiness and cash pressure no help (midranges and extremes tested).

sudo sysctl vm.vfs_cache_pressure=150
vm.vfs_cache_pressure = 150
sudo sysctl vm.swappiness=110
vm.swappiness = 110

Update of latest BIOS no help.
Exhaustive editing of Gimp preferences no effect.
OS is up to date.
Everything else on the computer is speedy, especially since doubling the ram. It still looks to me like GPU problem. (Opened the same file in Ubuntu/Gimp that Iā€™ve been using to test and performance was about the same. This is one of the reasons I suspect GPU.)
Iā€™m out of ideas and donā€™t know what to try next.
