Getting back on linux

I’ve been away from linux for a while. I’m now really fed up with Win11 and want to come back to linux. I almost always come back to Manjaro, however, this time I’m on a laptop (vs desktop).
Specs:
Lenovo Legion Slim 5 14" (14APH8)
CPU: AMD 7840HS with Radeon 780M Graphics
GPU: Nvidia 4060 Super

Concerns:

  1. Hardware drivers and compatibility.
  2. Power management.
  3. Desktop apps that I use, everything else is a webapp: NordVPN and Notion.

Is the default installation of Manjaro rolling release? Will this give me the latest updates, drivers and hardware firmware?

Manjaro, just like other Arch derivatives, is a rolling disto.

Install once - update regularly - always be up to date - never have to install ever again.

Use the newest install media - not one that is several months old.

You’ll still have to update right after installation, since some time has passed since even the newest install media has been created.

Boot the install media and find out whether everything works or what may not be.
It will always be the most current, provided you don’t skip updates.

Do search the forum - the Lenovo Legion seem to be a troubled system judging from the many issues you can find.

I second this.
Just boot the live medium that you want to install from. Update the system, but don’t reboot as it wont keep updates on rebooting.

If it worked I guess you can install it.
Manjaro is amazingly stable and responsive - I am only 1 week old on Manjaro but I see it is great. :+1:

I never heared that before, does this really make sense?

Just booting in a live environment should be enough. Updating the Live Boot looks like timewaste to me

I suggested this just to see how updates will go. If there is a problem with the system probably updates won’t be possible.

You are right for sure, what I thought was just to test if it will update or not.

Sorry, I am not an expert. Just my humble thinking what would I do if I am in his place.

I think your point to boot from a Live Medium is valid.

I just have no idea about the additional updating.

But since this Topic is 3 weeks old, the Topic Creator probably already gave up, otherwise he probably would response already.

My bad. I just didn’t see it is solved and didn’t pay attention to the date.

I just assumed if there is a problem it might not update. My humble thinking. Maybe it is one more test.

Any way I apologise for posting to an old thread.
