GDM login screen doesn't show login fields

Hi.
Since a few days ago I have a problem when booting my computer.
The GDM login doesn’t show the input fields so I can login.
That is what happens: GDM login screen - only calendar and power menu
Switching to a VT and restarting GDM service or running “startx” give me back the GDM screen with the login fields.
I already visited some topics like:
GDM Not correctly autostarting
And:
GDM(?) broken after upgrade - Unable to login - Not sure if I should downgrade that package and how to do it
Already tried to uninstall and reinstall Nvidia proprietary drivers Configure NVIDIA (non-free) settings and load them on Startup and tested in Kernel 5.4, 5.13, and now running on 5.10 LTS.

Linux danilo-pc 5.10.59-1-MANJARO #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Aug 15 13:11:32 UTC 2021 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Any ideas?

Hi there,

Check your journal for errors as per below and please report back:
sudo journalctl -b 0 -p err

Please tell us more about your hardware. Is this an optimus laptop? Would you be willing to provide a full inxi output as suggested below?

Thanks! :slightly_smiling_face: :+1:

Thanks for the command outputs.

This sounds like a timing issue. Even though your command outputs don’t show evidence of dual graphics card setup (this issue usually affects optimus laptops), it seems GDM is starting before DRM gets your graphics ready.

I’d give “Early KMS start” a try, as explained in the Arch Wiki.

Another option would be adding delay to the GDM start event (personally I don’t like this). See Here.

This sounds like you hit a known kernel bug
You might want to try other kernels (5.10+) if you wish.

Hi, thanks for the assistance.

There is no second/dual graphic card. I’m on a desktop PC.
Initially I was booting in kernel 5.13 (with 5.4 as second).
Following the “Early KMS start” did not produced any change.
I noticed the login screen is slow to show up, and after the login, the desktop also takes a long time to show up. That was similar to the reports on the kernel bug you linked.
I’m installing 5.14 kernel and just now received the notification of a system update (including fprint which was discussed on my second initial reference).

In a few minutes I’ll report back.

Thank you!

Hi again.

Unfortunately it didn’t work.
Tried the last kernel, after the updates and nothing.
Tried also delaying the GDM service, no joy.
I’ll try other DM (lightdm or something else).

Thanks.

Well, I’m sorry to hear that.

From that kernel bug report, it looks like the type of Nvidia card you have doesn’t get along very well with the latest kernels and extra modules.

Maybe trying another DM makes sense and would be an easier fix. Arch Wiki has a relevant section for GDM if you’re still interested in troubleshooting the issue.

Now I’m on LightDM and it worked like a charm.

I’ll look on that issue as now I can switch between DMs. If something changes, I’ll let you know.

EDIT: An update on GDM solved the issue. It is working just fine now.

I’m also experiencing this issue. I was using Gnome just fine about a week ago, and this suddenly cropped up. I did a format and clean install and the issue persists on a cold boot. If my system sleeps/hibernates/suspends, the login icon shows up, but that’s not a great solution.

I’m not entirely new to the Linux space, but I can’t even figure out how to troubleshoot this. I’ve tried dropping to TTY, but I get a single underscore character and nothing but CTL + ALT + DELETE can get me back to a screen.

I looked at the bug report, and I’ve got a card (NVidia 1650) that is probably affected by this.
