Game (wine based) not working after system update

Hope I choose correct forum. I’m usually updating system once every month or two, that’s why I’m not posting under current stable system update, since my last update was combined last few system updates.

I’m using Manjaro for only one reason, to run the game emulator Everquest TAKP, cool free MMOG, since I could not it get it to work on my main, Debian based Linux.

Game worked for about a year, but once Manjaro’s version changed from Ornara to Pahvo, I have over 95% failure. Which means sometimes, game client does start and I can play the game, after half hour trying and restarting computer, but even when I get it to work, it only work one game’s client. Game support 3-boxing and with only one character online you can’t move goods between characters or help each other.

Error msg is always the same, Wine crashes with error msg that log was not saved or error was not detected or something in this regard - there is no additional info in error msg.

With Timeshift, I reverted back to the stage before system update and now game works as before.

My question is, what are my options, beside never update Manjaro. Since it is only used for this game, it is probably not that risky keeping it not updated?

I’ve had the same problem, with the majority of my Wine games failing after an update on two different Manjaro KDE machines with different hardware and both an NVIDIA and AMD graphics card. I’ve reinstalled multiple versions of wine through the system as well as Lutris, tried all kinds of Vulkan, Proton, PlayOnLinux staging packages, but without success.
The games that still load now take minutes rather than seconds to start up or load the next level, with a variety of “fixme” errors such as fontconfig problems, “No NTLM support” etc. Hoping that a system update fixes this soon…

If you don’t want to suffer from Wine updates or system updates, a good way of running games is through Lutris so your Wine environment is untouched and separated from system.

Your game’s wiki has a walkthrough to use PlayOnLinux which is similar to Lutris.

However it says to use Wine 2.2… I don’t know about that… but there are lot of information to get the game running.

The link you posted, is one of three, older way of installing the game. That’s why it is referring to Wine 2.2 When I tried to install game for the first time, I tried all three ways, old, manually and new, and only last one, new worked, where script install and set up everything automatically.

I also tried several Linux distributions, and game worked only on Manjaro. Now that new Debian is out, I may try few Linux distributions again.

I’m noob, driver, not mechanic so, when I luckily get something to work, I tend to just keep it how it is, and hope to stay that way. Until I get game working on any other Linux distro flavour, I think I will just keep Manjaro how it is, without system updates, to not break it again. At least game is working

I see, thanks. So it is not just me then. OK, I’m keeping my Manjaro as it is then, without system updates from now on. Shouldn’t be too risky, since I’m only using it for this one game.
